"The driver fled the scene": daughter seeks help to find the person responsible for her father's death in Havana

The Cuban Aidyl Alfonso made an urgent appeal on Facebook following the death of her father, Antonio Infante Ajete, who was struck by a vehicle on Friday on Avenida 51 in the La Lisa municipality of Havana.

According to Alfonso, the driver involved fled the scene without offering assistance.

The incident took place near the ETECSA office in La Lisa, a well-known landmark in that area of the Cuban capital.

The victim's daughter is asking for the help of anyone who was at the scene at the time of the accident: "If you were in the area, saw the model of the car, remember any digits from the license plate, or have any details that could help identify the responsible party, please send me a private message."

He also requested that the post be shared widely to reach potential witnesses, and he ended his message with an appeal: "Any information, no matter how small, would be greatly appreciated."

Along with the text, the publication includes a photograph of Antonio Infante Ajete, a middle-aged man.

These cases happen frequently in Cuba: drivers fleeing after causing fatal accidents and families turning to social media as their only immediate means to seek witnesses in the absence of timely institutional responses.

In April 2025, a woman died in an alleged hit-and-run in Punta Brava, also in the municipality of La Lisa.

Other similar cases were documented that year: a cyclist was killed in Havana in April, and another died in the Lawton neighborhood in May, both cases involving a hit-and-run driver.

In August 2025, the community of Majagua, in Ciego de Ávila, also turned to social media to try to identify the driver responsible for the death of an elderly man who was hit on the road.

Traffic accidents in Cuba continue to claim lives year after year. According to the National Road Safety Commission, in 2025, there were 750 deaths recorded in 7,538 traffic accidents nationwide, and by the first quarter of 2026, 153 fatalities had already been counted.

Authorities attribute 72% of fatal accidents to human factors.
