Elon Musk has become the largest known donor to the Republican Party ahead of the midterm elections on November 3, after injecting over 275 million dollars into various Republican committees and super PACs in recent months, as revealed on Monday by a spokesperson for the magnate to the Financial Times.

Donations include 158 million dollars to the Senate Leadership Fund —the main super PAC supporting Republican Senate candidates— and 20 million to the Congressional Leadership Fund, which is aimed at the House of Representatives, in addition to dozens of millions more to its own America PAC.

Other sources raise the total figure to at least 276 million, which would place Musk's known federal contributions in this electoral cycle at around 366 million dollars.

The disbursement strengthens the already substantial financial advantage of the Republican party: the party committees and the super PAC Maga Inc have collectively raised over 1.1 billion dollars, compared to around 600 million from the Democrats, according to federal records as of the end of August.

America PAC is active in seven Senate contests —Michigan, Alaska, Ohio, Iowa, Texas, Maine, and New Hampshire— and in nearly 30 districts of the House of Representatives, funding fieldwork, text messaging, and digital and print advertising.

«If the Democrats take control of Washington and win key races for governors and attorneys general in November, the United States runs the risk of becoming a socialist, progressive, and borderless country,» stated Andrew Romeo, spokesperson for America PAC. «These strong investments have allowed the Republican apparatus to spread its message so that Republicans have a real chance to challenge history.»

The return of Musk to massive party funding comes just over a year after a public and high-profile split with President Donald Trump.

In June 2025, after stepping down from his role leading the so-called Government Efficiency Department, Musk harshly criticized Trump's tax law, describing it as a "scandalous bill, full of corruption," suggested ties between the president and the late Jeffrey Epstein, and even proposed the creation of a third party.

Trump responded by accusing him of going "crazy" and threatening to review federal contracts of his companies.

The reconciliation took shape throughout 2026. Musk accompanied Trump on a state visit to China in May, attended the state dinner for Chinese President Xi Jinping in September, and on October 8, received the National Medal of Science from the president, who described him as a "national treasure."

That same week he was appointed co-leader of the Project Meridian, a Pentagon review on military modernization.

The electoral context is challenging for the Republicans. According to various polls, the Democrats are favored to regain the House of Representatives with a probability ranging from 90% to 93% based on different models, while the Senate—currently controlled by the Republicans with 53 seats to 47—shapes up to be a highly contested battle.

Musk's political comeback is not without tensions: his companies—SpaceX, Tesla, and xAI—hold billions in federal contracts and are under regulatory scrutiny, including SpaceX's recent purchase of wireless spectrum licenses, which requires approval from the Federal Communications Commission under Trump.

In 2024, Musk had already spent nearly 300 million dollars to support the president's re-election, making him the largest individual donor of that campaign.
