Ramón Acosta-Díaz, a Cuban citizen convicted of intentional homicide in South Bay, Florida, was arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during the Columbus Day weekend and appears on the official list of the Department of Homeland Security published this Tuesday as part of the campaign “Worst of the Worst.”

Acosta-Díaz is the only Cuban included in the statement, which lists 20 foreigners in irregular status with serious criminal records arrested during that festive weekend at various locations across the country.

The Secretary of Homeland Security, Markwayne Mullin, signed the statement and declared: "While Americans enjoyed the Columbus Day weekend, the brave patriots of ICE were on the front lines arresting the worst of the worst in our communities, including murderers, pedophiles, rapists, drug traffickers, drunk drivers, and other threats to public safety."

The official also warned that, despite the politicians in the so-called "sanctuary cities" who refuse to honor immigration detention orders, "ICE will never stop pursuing, arresting, and deporting these criminals from the streets of the United States."

The 20 detainees presented in the operation are citizens of Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, and the Dominican Republic, with convictions ranging from homicide and vehicular homicide to sexual abuse of minors, distribution of heroin, and driving under the influence of alcohol.

The statement does not provide additional details about the circumstances of the crime committed by Acosta-Díaz, the date of his conviction, the sentence imposed, or the detention center to which he was transferred.

This is not the first time in recent weeks that a Cuban has appeared in this campaign by the Department of Homeland Security.

On October 10, Ángel Ramírez-Castillo was included in a similar announcement for convictions of attempted murder and aggravated assault in Miami. At the end of September, Rubén Ayala-Laies, convicted of second-degree murder in Florida, was also presented under the same label.

In September, ICE detained another Cuban who had convictions for soliciting homicide and possession of cocaine in St. Petersburg, Florida.

The campaign "Worst of the Worst" has been operating since late 2025, with statements published almost weekly, particularly emphasizing holiday weekends.

The ICE office in Miami, which has jurisdiction over Florida, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands, recorded more than 41,000 arrests between January 2025 and April 2026.

The statement issued this Tuesday also refers to data released on Monday by the DHS, which indicates that the state of New York rejected over 16,000 detainer requests from ICE, in the context of the political debate surrounding sanctuary cities.
