A group of American military personnel held a celebration with cake at the Naval Base in Guantanamo, Cuba, as part of the events for the 251st anniversary of the United States Navy, an institution whose origins date back to October 13, 1775.

The Naval Base Guantánamo reported on Facebook that the ceremony took place in the military dining facility Gold Hill Galley, where the sailors recognized as the best of the quarter had the honor of cutting the commemorative cake.

The military installation explained that the activity aimed to celebrate 251 years of tradition, service, and dedication, as well as to pay tribute to the generations of sailors who have been part of the institution.

"We honor the sacrifices of the comrades who navigated before us and find enduring strength in their victories," the base stated in its publication.

The message also highlighted the cooperation of the U.S. Navy with other branches of the Armed Forces and with its international allies, as well as the role of military traditions in uniting active, reserve, and civilian personnel.

The ceremony in Guantánamo took place in the context of the celebrations for the anniversary of the U.S. Navy, which was established in 1775 when the Continental Congress authorized the creation of a naval force during the War of Independence of the Thirteen Colonies.

Precisely, the anniversary celebrated on October 13 was accompanied by a review of the history of the Navy and the American presence at the Guantanamo Naval Base, a facility that Washington has maintained on Cuban territory since the early 20th century.

The base is one of the most sensitive points in the relations between Cuba and the United States.

The Cuban government demands its return, while Washington maintains control of the facility under the historic agreements that govern its occupation.

Beyond its military functions, the facility organizes recreational, sports, and commemorative activities for its staff.

Days before the anniversary celebration, teams of participants pulled a fire truck during a competition organized at the Guantánamo Naval Base, one of the activities promoted from the site.

On this occasion, the spotlight was on the distinguished sailors of the quarter, who were responsible for cutting the cake in a ceremony that commemorated 251 years of history of the United States Navy.
