Matanzas is experiencing a sustained increase in patients with fever associated with the circulation of arboviruses, a situation that affects the entire province, although five municipalities account for the majority of reports.

The most affected areas are Cárdenas, Pedro Betancourt, Los Arabos, Ciénaga de Zapata, and Matanzas, as reported by the state media TV Yumurí, which warned that none of the municipalities in Matanzas remain unaffected by the current epidemiological scenario.

The state media described the increase as a "typical situation for this time of year." October and November are months of particular epidemiological complexity in the province, as health authorities have previously acknowledged.

They also emphasized the need to strengthen prevention measures, especially among groups at higher risk of developing complications.

According to TV Yumurí, health authorities recommend paying special attention to the most vulnerable individuals, especially those with pre-existing conditions, the elderly, and pregnant women, due to their higher risk of complications.

Meanwhile, efforts to sanitize workplaces continue, where the elimination of potential mosquito breeding sites is required.

Families are also urged to conduct self-assessments by checking for standing water and removing containers that collect water, both inside their homes and in their surroundings.

On October 13, the director of the Eliseo Noel Caamaño Provincial Pediatric Hospital, Anaelis Santana Álvarez, denied that the facility was overwhelmed and stated that Matanzas was not facing an epidemic. She also asserted at that time that there was no significant increase in arboviruses.

However, he acknowledged the active circulation of arboviruses alongside about 20 respiratory viruses.

According to the data provided at that time, the hospital had 178 of its 209 beds active and recorded an occupancy rate below 90%.

Cuba is facing a high circulation of dengue

The situation in Matanzas is part of a national scenario marked by the increase in mosquito-borne diseases.

According to estimates from the Global Dengue Observatory, Cuba had accumulated around 11,235 cases of dengue by October 4, 2026, a figure equivalent to 9.2 times the historical average for the country over the past five years.

This is compounded by the simultaneous circulation of the four serotypes of dengue in the country, with a predominance of serotype 2, as confirmed by the Deputy Minister of Public Health, Carilda Peña, at the end of September.

The presence of multiple serotypes increases health risks, as a person who has previously contracted dengue may have a higher risk of developing a severe form of the disease if they subsequently become infected with a different serotype.
