A batch of cold-smoked Norwegian salmon, distributed in Florida and five other states in the United States, was voluntarily recalled due to the risk of contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a bacteria that can cause serious infections, especially in vulnerable individuals.
The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published on October 16, 2026, the statement from the distributor Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc., based in Brooklyn, New York, which had announced the voluntary recall of the product on the 9th of the same month.
The alert specifically affects the product Starfish Seafood Premium Cold Smoked Norwegian Salmon Sliced, a cold-smoked Norwegian salmon sliced and sold in vacuum-sealed plastic packages of 227 grams, equivalent to 8 ounces.
According to the notice, the product was distributed in six states: Florida, New York, Georgia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Ohio.
The FDA did not identify the supermarket chains or specific establishments that received the packages, making it impossible to determine from the statement which stores in Florida had them available.
The recall began after a sampling conducted by the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets detected a possible contamination with Listeria monocytogenes in the product.
Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc. then initiated the voluntary withdrawal procedure and notified its commercial clients to immediately suspend the sale and distribution of the affected salmon, identify remaining stocks, and inform their buyers as appropriate.
The company clarified that it acts as a wholesale distributor and did not manufacture the recalled product, which has a declared country of origin of Latvia.
To correctly identify the packages included in the alert, consumers must review the following information:
- Brand: Starfish Seafood.
- Product: Premium Cold Smoked Norwegian Salmon Sliced (Norwegian cold smoked salmon, sliced).
- Presentation: 227 grams (8 ounces).
- UPC Code: 4751048940099.
- Lot number: D080-148.
- Preferred consumption date: November 27, 2027, identified on the packaging as 27.11.2027.
- Packaging: vacuum-sealed plastic package.
- Storage: frozen.
The warning pertains to the identified lot and does not imply that all products from Starfish Seafood or all varieties of smoked salmon sold in the United States are affected.
The company has specifically requested that those who purchased the withdrawn package not consume it and return it to the place of purchase for a full refund.
The recommendation is also important for those who store food for long periods, as the preferred consumption date of the product extends until November 2027.
Therefore, some buyers may still have packages from the affected batch in their freezers without knowing that a recall has been announced.
The potential presence of Listeria monocytogenes poses a health risk because it can cause an illness known as listeriosis.
According to the statement released by the FDA, the infection can be particularly dangerous for small children, older adults, individuals with weakened conditions, and patients with compromised immune systems.
In previously healthy individuals, it can cause symptoms such as high fever, intense headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea.
In pregnant women, the infection can also lead to serious complications, including miscarriages and fetal deaths.
However, as of the date of the announcement, no illnesses related to the consumption of the recalled salmon had been reported.
The measure is preventive and is based on the results of health sampling, not on the confirmation of a listeriosis outbreak among consumers of this product.
The FDA publishes withdrawal announcements made by companies as part of its public information service. In this case, the decision was voluntarily made by Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc. and does not correspond to a withdrawal order imposed by the federal agency.
Consumers with questions about the product or the return process can contact Krasnyi Oktyabr Inc. at 718-858-6720, Monday through Friday, between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM Eastern Time.
The withdrawal of salmon comes after other food safety alerts recently issued in the United States due to potential bacterial contamination.
On October 9th, it was reported about the recall of certain broccoli seeds intended for germination that were sold through Amazon, Walmart, TikTok Shop, and other platforms due to the risk of contamination with Salmonella.
That measure affected a product identified by the brand Gardeners Basics and was part of health investigations related to outbreaks of broccoli, although the company had not received any reports of illnesses specifically linked to its recalled seeds up until that point.
In September, it was also announced the recall of a frozen fruit mix sold at Walmart, distributed in Florida and other states, due to a potential contamination with a strain of Escherichia coli.
In that case, the authorities identified batch codes and best-before dates to help consumers determine if they had affected products.
