The Abel Santamaría Cuadrado General Teaching Hospital in Pinar del Río was the site this Sunday of the birth of three triplets, all in good health according to the monitoring by the medical team, according to a post on Facebook by Yamilé Ramos Cordero, the First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) in Pinar del Río.
The three newborns arrived in the world weighing 1,989 grams, 2,000 grams, and 2,130 grams, respectively. The released images show the infants in incubators, under the care of healthcare personnel.
"A triplet birth has just taken place at the Abel Santamaría Hospital, with three infants weighing 1989, 2000, and 2130 grams, showing good vitality according to the doctors' assessment," wrote Ramos Cordero, who accompanied the post with images of the healthcare team and the babies in incubators.
According to the same source, this is the second mother to give birth to triplets in 2026 in Pinar del Río.
The birth of triplets is estimated to occur at a natural frequency of one in every 7,000 to 10,000 pregnancies, making it a high-risk obstetric and neonatal event. According to information released by Ramos Cordero, the three babies showed good vitality after birth.
The Abel Santamaría is the main hospital center in Pinar del Río. According to data released in 2023, it accounted for nearly 95% of the births in the province, and approximately 23% of newborns required specialized neonatal care. Its Neonatology service — the only one of its kind in Vueltabajo — was inaugurated that year after a major renovation, with an investment of 15.8 million Cuban pesos in a project that included intensive and intermediate care areas, isolation cubicles, a clinical laboratory, X-ray facilities, and a laminar flow system.
The birth this Sunday occurs against the backdrop of a severe electricity crisis in Pinar del Río, although the hospital is listed among the prioritized centers to receive electricity during the blackouts that are affecting the province.
In June 2026 Ian, Dylan, and Liam were born at Lenin Hospital in Holguín, who were discharged in August after weeks of specialized neonatal care. In September 2025, a birth of triplets was also recorded at Ciro Redondo Hospital in Artemisa.
The country is also experiencing a health crisis, which is reflected in the increase in infant mortality: Cuba closed 2025 with a rate of 9.9 deaths per 1,000 live births, compared to 7.1 in 2024, a situation that underscores the importance of medical care for high-risk pregnancies and deliveries, such as the one recorded this Sunday at the Abel Santamaría.
