The city of Miramar, in Broward County, Florida, will open this Thursday applications for a financial assistance program of up to $8,000 aimed at families needing to cover the initial costs of a new rental home.
The city council announced the opening date on its official Rental Assistance Program page, through which a one-time grant is offered to qualifying households.
The money can be used to pay for the security deposit, the first and/or last month's rent, and the connection fees for basic services, as part of the necessary costs for moving into a home within Miramar.
The assistance is not a monthly subsidy nor is it designed to indefinitely cover rent. Its purpose is to facilitate access to a new home when a family does not have enough money to meet the upfront costs.
For example, a family that needs to pay the deposit and several months' rent in advance could request assistance to cover part of those expenses, as long as they meet the program's requirements.
The grant can reach up to $8,000, although it does not mean that all applicants will receive that amount. The approval and the amount will depend on the assessment of each household and the available resources.
The call is aimed at families with low to moderate incomes, with a limit of up to 120% of the area median income (AMI), based on household size.
Moreover, the property intended for rent must be located within the city limits of Miramar, so it is not sufficient to reside in any locality within Broward County.
The program can be useful for Cuban families and other immigrants looking to rent in Miramar, provided they meet the applicable economic, documentation, and immigration status requirements.
Among the documents requested by the municipality are official photo identifications of the adult members of the household, Social Security cards, and proof of U.S. citizenship or legal immigration status.
It is also necessary to provide information about family income, federal tax returns for the last two years, bank documentation, and other proof of economic resources.
To demonstrate that there is an available housing unit, the applicant must provide a letter of approval from the management company or the owner, along with a copy of the signed or pending rental agreement.
The letter must indicate the property address, the monthly rent amount, the duration of the contract, its start date, and the amounts that need to be paid to occupy the residence.
The official list of documents published by Miramar also includes specific requirements for self-employed workers, unemployed individuals, retirees, and households that receive public benefits or financial assistance from family members.
Applications will begin to be accepted on October 29 through Neighborly, the electronic platform used by the city to manage its housing programs.
Interested parties must access the official Miramar application portal, register with a valid email address, complete the corresponding form, and attach the required documentation.
The municipality warns that all sections of the application must be completed and that additional documents may be required during the review.
Assistance will be processed in the order of complete applications and compliance with requirements, according to the program's priorities and fund availability.
For guidance, interested parties can contact the Miramar Housing Division at 954-883-5386 or write to Housing@Miramarfl.gov.
The city also provides assistance for submitting applications through previously scheduled appointments, according to the conditions announced in its housing programs.
This assistance is different from programs that offer support to families with overdue rent or difficulties keeping up with their current housing payments.
It should also be distinguished from the assistance recently announced in North Miami, a city in Miami-Dade County where there is a program offering up to $4,800 to cover initial rental expenses, subject to different requirements.
In the same locality, another program will launch on November 16 with grants of up to $9,000 for urgent repairs of homes for homeowners over 62 years old.
