The culinary community of Varadero bids farewell with deep sadness to Antonio Peguero, a chef who dedicated decades of his life to gastronomy in Cuba's main tourist center and became a beloved figure for those who shared the kitchens and daily life with him.
The news was reported by the independent communicator Christian Arbolaez, associated with the Cárdenas and Varadero community, who described Peguero as someone who "managed to earn the respect and affection of those who shared with him both in and out of the kitchens."
The post sparked a wave of condolences from former colleagues, chefs, kitchen assistants, and friends from various generations.
Peguero developed his career in the hotel sector of the Hicacos Peninsula, since the early 2000s, with stints at establishments such as the Kawama Hotel and the Karey Club. He worked for companies like Iberostar in Cuba.
In his Facebook profile, he indicated that he was from Varadero and resided in Cárdenas. His last post on that social network was dedicated to congratulating chefs on their International Day (October 20), and he received nearly a hundred comments with greetings from his professional colleagues and close friends.
Those who knew him remember him as a creative and entrepreneurial professional, capable of leading a kitchen while maintaining a close connection with his team.
Beyond his profession, he was known for his cheerful and joking character, with a special talent for making those around him laugh even in the most difficult moments.
He lived with diabetes for many years, a condition he managed discreetly, according to Arbolaez.
Friends who knew Chef Peguero well expressed their sorrow on social media. "What a kind man, friend, and leader. I hope many follow the example of the numerous values he embodied."
A person who worked alongside the chef summarized the widespread sentiment: "What sad news... A great person, an excellent coworker, and a wonderful professional. Honestly, it makes me very sad."
Another friend remarked, "With great sorrow, we received the news of the passing of our dear friend. Our condolences to his beloved mother and other family members."
Arbolaez closed his tribute with words that encapsulate the collective sentiment: "Varadero loses an excellent professional in gastronomy, and many people say goodbye to a dear friend, an unwavering companion, and a man who knew how to earn the affection of those around him."
