A man was arrested in Camagüey after wounding a security guard with a knife during an attempted robbery at the Santa Rosa market, as shown in a video shared on Facebook by journalist José Luis Tan Estrada, which has garnered over 4.7 million views and exceeds 356,000 "likes."
The clip, lasting just 16 seconds, captures the moment of the assailant's capture: "A security worker at the Santa Rosa market in the city of Camagüey was stabbed during an attempted robbery that took place this Friday, October 30, around 4:00 PM," the reporter specified
Tan Estrada explained that the young man, "approximately 20 years old, entered the establishment with the intention of stealing. Upon realizing what was happening, several workers closed the doors to prevent him from escaping. At that moment, the assailant attacked the guard who was monitoring the entrance, described by the source as an elderly man."
The incident occurs amid a sustained rise in crime in Camagüey. According to a municipal report from the first half of 2026, the provincial capital recorded more than 600 offenses, with 40% concentrated in "burglary, crimes against life, and livestock theft."
Stabbings have become a recurring issue in the city. In April 2026, a woman was left in critical condition after being attacked with a knife near the Train Station during the theft of her bicycle, marking the second violent assault reported in that area within less than a week.
In August, two individuals armed with knives stole a scooter from its owner near the Plaza de la Revolución; the Police later reported the recovery of the vehicle. That same month, residents of the Previsora neighborhood captured a thief they found in the backyard of a house, in the absence of police officers at the scene.
State facility custodians have frequently been victims of assaults during robberies across Cuba. In March 2025, Osmany Trujillo Guevara, 58 years old, was shot and killed while trying to prevent a robbery at a warehouse in the municipality of Esmeralda, in the province of Camagüey.
In Las Tunas, on August 24, 2026, a security guard was killed and another worker was injured during an assault on the bicycle parking lot of the Ernesto Guevara General Teaching Hospital; three young men were arrested weeks later in connection with this case.
In mid-October, three people were apprehended in Santiago de Cuba after robbing a fiberglass factory and assaulting its guard, in a pattern that is repeating across different provinces in the country.
Facebook has become the primary channel for citizen reporting of criminal incidents in Cuba, given the limited or nonexistent coverage that state media provides on violence and insecurity. The video from the Camagüey market is the most recent example of how the population turns to social media and independent communicators to highlight a reality that the regime prefers to silence.
