Elon Musk resorted to irony to respond to the Republican Party's defeat in the U.S. midterm elections, after investing hundreds of millions of dollars to support conservative candidates who faced significant electoral setbacks, especially in Texas.
The businessman posted several sarcastic messages on his social network X during the early hours of Wednesday, November 4, when the results confirmed a Democratic victory that would change the balance of power in Washington during the last two years of President Donald Trump.
The Democrats regained control of the House of Representatives and the Senate, as well as achieving significant victories in Texas, where Musk had focused a considerable portion of his political contributions and where companies like Tesla and SpaceX operate.
The irony of Musk regarding electoral interference
One of the most striking posts from the magnate was a joke about alleged technological interference in the electoral processes.
“I suppose my space lasers to interfere with the elections didn’t work this time,” Musk wrote, accompanied by a shrug emoji.
The phrase sarcastically refers to conspiracy theories about technologies capable of interfering in elections, on a night marked by the defeat of numerous candidates whom the businessman had financially supported.
Musk also shared another message that gained special significance due to the victory of Democrat Gina Hinojosa over Republican Governor Greg Abbott in Texas.
“Data centers in space look quite appealing now,” he wrote on X.
Hinojosa advocated during his campaign for a moratorium on the construction of new artificial intelligence data centers, facilities that have sparked controversy in various communities due to their high consumption of electricity and water, as well as their potential effects on energy rates.
The proposal impacts a strategic sector for large technology companies, which need to expand their processing capacity to develop artificial intelligence systems.
Texas has become one of the top destinations for these investments due to its availability of land and energy infrastructure.
Musk's comment was interpreted as a reference to the potential restrictions that these projects might encounter following Hinojosa's victory, although the entrepreneur did not explicitly clarify the meaning of his post.
Hours later, Musk shared an image of the old American television test pattern known as Indian Head Test Pattern, used for decades to identify interruptions in broadcasts.
The image conveyed the message: “We apologize! WE ARE EXPERIENCING TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES”.
A million-dollar investment that did not prevent defeats
The entrepreneur's posts gained special significance due to the magnitude of the resources he had allocated to the 2026 legislative elections.
According to estimates reported by U.S. media, Musk invested over 400 million dollars to support Republican candidates and conservative organizations.
Some calculations raised the figure to approximately 474 million dollars, making him one of the largest individual donors of the electoral cycle.
A significant portion of that money was concentrated in Texas, where it supported the Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton in his candidacy for the federal Senate against Democrat James Talarico.
According to an analysis published by WIRED, the groups funded by Musk allocated around 195 million dollars to support Paxton and conduct campaigns against Talarico. Other estimates placed the resources linked to that contest above 200 million.
The investment did not achieve the expected result. Talarico defeated Paxton with approximately 54% of the votes, according to preliminary results, becoming the first Democrat elected to the federal Senate from Texas since 1988.
Texas also elected Gina Hinojosa as governor, who defeated Abbott and ended decades of Republican control over the state's governorship.
The impact of the defeats of candidates backed by Musk extended beyond Texas.
An analysis by WIRED noted that, among the races that already had a defined outcome by early Wednesday, candidates backed by America PAC had lost 20 elections and won only one, while another 21 remained unresolved.
The Democrats regain Congress
The elections on Tuesday, November 3, also marked a significant change in the American political landscape, following nearly two years of Republican control of the White House and Congress.
The Democrats regained control of the Senate, with projections giving them at least 54 seats compared to 46 Republicans.
In the House of Representatives, they also managed to regain the majority, with projections of at least 231 seats, above the 218 needed to control the institution.
The results will force Trump to tackle the second half of his term with a Congress controlled by the opposition, which could hinder the approval of new legislative and budgetary initiatives.
The change could also have consequences for Musk, who led the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) until May 2025.
Democratic lawmakers had proposed to examine their actions and potential conflicts of interest related to their companies and federal contracts.
With control of both chambers, the Democrats will have greater tools to request information and oversee those activities.
The initiation of specific investigations will depend on the decisions made by the new majorities.
