Cuban artists take to the streets on their own initiative to help those affected by the tornado in Havana

A group of Cuban artists, including Haydée Milanés and Athanai, have gone out to help "on their own initiative" the residents of the neighborhoods affected by the tornado that hit Havana on Sunday.

"I have come here, to the neighborhood that is made of talcum powder, with several artists... who, on our own initiative, with our own money, have bought things to bring to people and help them," said the 'white rapper' Athanai in a video on Facebook from one of the devastated areas.

"They need to stop posting on Facebook and spending so much money on what they don't have to spend and come here to help people who have nothing," asked this artist.

Athanai specified that "there are lots of children, people who have nowhere to sleep today, people who don't have anything to eat."

According to the first estimates of the Cuban government There are 1,238 homes affected, of which 347 total collapses of houses and roofs.

Along with him were also the pianist Cucurucho Valdés and the journalist Michel Hernández, who toured the Diez de Octubre municipality, one of the most affected.

"They really need to come and lend a hand, come here with a shovel, we have to clean all this, this neighborhood is falling apart," Athanai added in the middle of streets full of debris.

While some artists and Cubans gather on social networks to organize collections to help the victims, Some neighbors complain about the lack of state aid.

"Where is 'the commander' of our country? Where is he that he hasn't come here to see which boy is missing milk?" a neighbor from Luyanó questioned the ruler Miguel Díaz-Canel, who He celebrated the torch march with Raúl Castro one day after tornado passing through Havana.

For her part, Haydée Milanés said that there are many people who need water, food, clothing and "physical help also to remove debris."

"I urge you that whoever can bring anything, these people will be very grateful," he said.

The musician Cucurucho Valdés pointed out that "our capital is totally devastated."

"Please bring whatever you have, everything is needed. People are sleeping on the floor"This is a shame, really."

Cucurucho pointed out that what they were doing, "any artist can do it, it's not just talking on the networks, it's coming here and bringing."

According to journalist Michel Hernández, they will organize a download this Friday with several artists in the affected communities. "Today it was their turn but tomorrow it could be us, which is the same thing," he said.

So far, state media reports the death of four people and 195 injuries.

Some artists like Waldo Mendoza have announced that they will donate the entire cover of their download this Saturday at the Café Cantante in Havana.

Others like Alejandro Sanz has asked that the Díaz-Canel government allow donations and ease customs regulations.
