A young Cuban is murdered with a firearm in his own home in Havana

A 24-year-old Cuban was shot dead this Monday afternoon inHavana, as revealedCubanet citing sources close to the victim.

“Two guys came and shot him. "He went to look for a machete and they shot him again, but they didn't hit him.", a friend of the deceased declared to the aforementioned independent media, on condition of anonymity.

The murdered young man was identified asFidel Mayeta Calderín and the crime occurred at the victim's home, located on Aguacate Street, between O'Reilly and San Juan de Dios, in the Habana Vieja municipality.

The victim was a native of Songo La Maya, in Santiago de Cuba, although he had been living in the capital for some years, in the company of his wife and his mother-in-law, the latter a witness to the murder.

The young man's partner was arrested after the crime due to the alleged confiscation of illicit substances in the home.a, according to the aforementioned media, which detailed that the woman had already been imprisoned for drugs.

After the violent incident, Fidel Mayeta Calderín – known as “Cosuro” – was transferred to the “Calixto García” Hospital, where he died.

The aforementioned source specified that, although the shot did not involve any organs, the young man had complications that resulted in his death.

On social networks, friends and family of Fidel Mayeta were shocked by the crime.

"'My brother', as we call ourselves [...] I still don't believe this has happened. You are not my blood brother but I love you as if you were. You wrote to me yesterday everything was fine [...] I only ask May God enlighten you, may he give you a lot of light. You have left a devastated world. I will always love you to infinity, my brother," wrote the Internet user identified on networks as Yanets Yanets.

"Whoever plotted all this did not have enough courage to do it alone. But justice exists," he concluded.

The body of Fidel Mayeta Caldería is being laid to rest this Tuesday at the Calzada y K funeral home, in El Vedado, from where his remains will be transferred to his province.

As of the closing of this note, there are no other confirmed details about the crime, which adds to the wave of growing violence that has hit Cuba in recent months.

What stands out in this case, however, is the presence of a firearm, a detail that underlines the worrying increase in violence on the island, where such weapons are not usually available to the population.
