More than 40 residents of the Miami apartment building that caught fire on Monday morning were displaced from their homes, authorities reported.

Many of these people are now seeking refuge or have moved to relatives' homes, Local 10 reported in an update on the incident.

The media outlet itself claimed to have witnessed the transfer of several residents, mostly over 60 years old, in Miami streetcars. They assert that some were accompanied by pets.

The majority arrived with only the clothes they were wearing at the José Martí gym, where they were received by the Mayor of Miami, Francis Suarez, and representatives of the Red Cross, they specify.

"Some of them will need their medication. Obviously, they are hungry and will need food. The situation was not planned, so we need to accommodate them immediately until, hopefully, they can reach their family members, but we can find them another permanent housing," Suárez told Local 10.

Miami Commissioner Manolo Reyes announced that each person entering the facilities will receive a gift card of $250 for food and essential toiletries.

Likewise, the person they found injured by a gunshot at the entrance of the property was identified as an employee of Atlantic Housing Management, the company that manages the apartments.

The victim was transported to a nearby hospital, where they remain in critical condition, Local 10 reported.

The authorities said that the shooting is part of an active investigation and called it an "isolated incident." The man has not been identified by the police.

About the firefighters who were taken to the hospital due to heat exhaustion, no details were provided.
