The passage of Hurricane Helene near the western Cuban coast caused significant damage to the aging infrastructure present on the island, such as the Malecón in Havana and the avenue that runs through that famous site of the capital.
According to a communication from the Provincial Road Safety Commission in Havana, the strong waves on the Havana coast associated with Helene, along with the seawater inundation, caused structural damage to the Malecón Avenue, posing a danger to vehicle traffic.
They announced "immediate" repair actions, for which they decided to implement total closure measures on the section from 1830 to street 15, starting at 6:00 a.m. on September 28 and until the work is completed.
The alternative routes recommended by the authorities are Calzada, 3rd, 5th, and Línea streets.
They also apologize for any inconvenience these measures may cause and urge road users to comply with the established provisions and remain attentive to the instructions of the authorities, in order to prevent traffic accidents from occurring.
In Cuba, the provinces most affected by the passage of Helene were Pinar del Río and Mayabeque; but the most striking images were from Batabanó, in the latter province, where the water rose more than a meter and entered the houses.
The strong swells in the Surgidero de Batabanó caused serious damage, with the sea invading urban areas and affecting local infrastructure.
In Pinar del Río, the intense rains and coastal flooding in areas like Boca de Galafre, in the municipality of San Juan and Martínez, caused river overflowing and affected several municipalities in the province.
