Cuban actor Alexis Valdés won the 2024 Martín Fierro Latino Award in the category of Humorous Work in Television and Platforms.
The ceremony, organized by the Association of Journalists of Argentine Television and Radio (APTRA), took place on November 22 at the JW Marriott in Brickell, Miami.
Valdés competed with prominent talents such as Ariel Tarico (Argentina), Momi Giardina (Luzu TV), Eugenio Derbéz (Mexico), and Luis Slimming (Chile).
The Martín Fierro Award is one of the most prestigious honors in the fields of television, radio, and media in Argentina.
This award has been given annually since 1959, and its purpose is to recognize excellence in television and radio productions from that South American country.
The Martín Fierro Latino (or Latina) is an extension of the Martín Fierro Awards, created to recognize excellence in television, radio, and digital media produced by the Latin community in various regions, particularly in the United States.
This award aims to highlight the talents, programs, and productions in Spanish that represent the Spanish-speaking audience outside of Argentina.
“Will they give us the award? Maybe that’s not the most important thing. It's a moment of joy. But the real prize is staying active after so many years... and that prize has been awarded to me by all of you. You have been immensely generous. Thanks to that, we continue on. Trying to make people laugh like we did on the first day. Happy day to everyone,” Valdés wrote on Instagram days before the event.
"Here we are. Nominated for the awards of a culture I have admired my entire life: Argentine culture. The culture of Les Luthiers, Pinti, Lupi, Alterio, Brandoni, Franchella, Darín, Morán, Zorrilla (as Uruguayan as she is Argentine), Aristarán, Jusid, Puenzo, Borges, Facundo... So many," he remarked excitedly when he was already in the venue, accompanied by his wife, Claudia Valdés.
After receiving the statuette, Valdés shared a video on Instagram to express his gratitude to his colleagues and followers.
"Thank you, how beautiful, how beautiful, how beautiful! And precisely from Argentina. The country of the actors and comedians who inspired me when I started," he wrote.
He also posted a humorous video in which his popular characters Nereida and Cristinito claimed the award, eliciting laughs from their followers.
Born in Havana in 1963, Alexis Valdés grew up surrounded by art, being the son of Cuban comedian Leonel Valdés. Although he initially studied engineering, his calling led him to pursue a career as an actor in Cuba for a decade.
In the 1990s, he emigrated to Spain, where he gained recognition on shows like El Club de la Comedia and made his directorial debut with Un rey en La Habana (2005).
Later, in Miami, he expanded his career with successful programs such as Esta Noche Tu Night and Seguro que Yes, as well as venturing into theater and literature.
Since 2023, Valdés has been hosting the podcast Qué Desastre!, where he discusses social and cultural topics with his trademark humorous style. This project was pivotal to his success at the Martín Fierro awards ceremony.
