Two Cuban citizens were arrested for thefts committed in the historic center of the city of Rome this week, according to local press reports.
During operations carried out by the Carabinieri of the Central Company of Rome, aimed at preventing and curbing urban crime in the lead-up to the year-end celebrations, two men of Cuban nationality were caught and arrested for stealing from a tourist and from a store in separate incidents.
One of them, 30 years old, was arrested by the Carabineros at the Aventino Station in Rome, accused of stealing a tourist's bag while he was eating at a restaurant in the area. The officers managed to capture him before he could escape.
The other Cuban, 20 years old, was arrested by the Carabineros from the San Lorenzo Station in Lucina, immediately after stealing several articles of clothing from a luxury goods store on Via del Corso.
The authorities did not disclose the identities of those detained.
In a police offensive in the historic center of Rome and its surroundings, individuals from other countries were also apprehended for theft or drug trafficking. According to the report, the police paid special attention to restaurants with outdoor terraces, which are often targeted by "criminals seeking distracted or unwary victims."
At the beginning of this month, media outlets in the city of Milan reported another criminal act committed by a Cuban national. The individual, 29 years old, was arrested after stealing from a 75-year-old man on an M3 train at the San Babila station on December 2, according to MilanoToday.
The suspect took advantage of the moment when the elderly man was helping his wife get off the train to open the man's bag and take the wallet, which contained documents and about 65 euros.
However, while he was committing the robbery, he was observed by a police officer from the sixth anti-pickpocket section of the Mobile Brigade, who immediately arrested him.
In recent years, numerous thefts committed by Cubans have been reported in various cities across Italy. However, nationals from Cuba have also been arrested for more serious crimes, such as drug trafficking and murder.
In May, a 27-year-old Cuban was arrested on the outskirts of Milan after being accused of stabbing a 13-year-old Egyptian boy during an alleged drug transaction. The minor passed away days after the assault.
