Agents of the National Revolutionary Police (PNR) arrested two men who were caught illegally slaughtering two cattle in a home, following a complaint from neighbors in the area.
According to the official profile Héroes del Moncada published this Friday, the events took place on Calle Laguna Final, in the Flores neighborhood, Santiago de Cuba municipality, after residents alerted the authorities about the "commission of a criminal activity" in a house in the area.
The PNR responded "immediately" and caught the individuals involved — identified as Antonio and Ricardo — when they were performing the slaughter of cattle.
The official report claims that, during the operation, law enforcement seized meat and also tools that, according to the publication, may have been used to commit the crime.
In the same post, there are reactions from users in the comments, some of which criticize the food situation while others defend the pet owners. However, the publication does not provide additional information about the case: it does not specify the last names of those detained, whether others were involved, the origin of the livestock, the destination of the meat, nor does it inform about formal charges, precautionary measures, or the trial date.
Internet users questioned the final destination of that meat and criticized the swift action of the authorities in such cases but not in cases of theft or femicides.
"Sell meat to the people or let the people sell their meat to whoever they want, and that will solve the problem," said a Cuban. "At least it’s good meat, not dog or cat," argued another.
Another pointed out that the work of informants in the neighborhoods had helped with the capture: "The snitching culture at its peak, that’s why Cuba isn’t thriving."
"And now, I'm sure that meat is distributed among units, and the people continue to suffer from hunger; many children have nothing to eat, and for them, that's just an average situation," noted another person.
It was recently revealed that a police operation in the Niceto Pérez municipality, Guantánamo province, ended with the arrest of seven individuals accused of being part of an alleged network dedicated to the theft and illegal slaughter of large cattle.
According to the publication, the detainees were intercepted at different locations within the territory. Two of them were reportedly caught while transporting backpacks containing meat that allegedly came from the slaughter of three animals.
Two other suspects were discovered while they were dismembering a horse in a rural area known as Burenes.
While the authorities present these cases as "blows to crime," numerous Cubans report that the real issue lies in the severe economic and food crisis the country is facing, where accessing a piece of meat has become a luxury.
