Four illegal Cuban migrants arrested in Guatemala

Four Cubans who were in an irregular immigration situation in Guatemala were detained yesterday in that Central American country.

In accordance with the portal of the Guatemalan Ministry of the Interior, the Antilleans identified are: Noila Santa Cruz Russet, 40 years old, Eliezer Ricardo Rivero Quesada, 23, Rubícel Zayas Rodríguez, 35, Cuban, and Alexander González Castañeda, also 40.

The arrest occurred after around 14 agents, from different units of the National Civil Police (PNC), carried out a national operation against illicit human trafficking and other crimes at the CENMA bus terminal, where they were located. those of the Island.

The operations were carried out at various transportation points, and their main objective was to locate and identify those who enter Guatemala irregularly.

The context for Cuban migrants is increasingly complicated, especially after the United States eliminated the Law of Dry Feet Wet Feet, which allowed them to be welcomed there in greater numbers.

However, current regulations cause several groups to concentrate in different countries without legal status. Last Sunday, furthermore, Mexico announced budget cuts of the funds allocated to migration.

"Here we have three very complicated problems: the community of deportees, the community that comes in national transit and the one that is arriving en masse from abroad or who arrived and are still here, or who are being returned from the United States to Mexico and come from south to north,” explained José María García Lara, director of the Youth Hostel 2000 in the city of Juárez.

It has also been reported that Mexican immigration agents There have been Cuban detainees who even present proper documentation for their migratory regularity. Some have decided to settle there, due to the long waits that occur after applying for asylum.

Within the United States, in the detention centers the panorama has been characterized by hunger strikes and suicide attempts. One of the known cases is that of Roylán Hernández Díaz, died allegedly after attempting on his own life.
