Bárbaro Alexander López Miranda, the only Cuban survivor of the tragic traffic accident that cost the lives of nine other compatriots in Guatemala last Saturday, receivespsychological care and support from immigration authorities of the Central American country.
Personnel from the Subdirectorate of Care and Protection of Fundamental Rights of Migrants visited the 29-year-old Cuban at the Escuintla care center, where he is recovering from his injuries.reported the Guatemalan Migration Institute (IGM).
López Miranda received psychological attention due topost-traumatic stress after the accident in whichnine Cubans and two Guatemalans lost their lives, at kilometer 134 of the highway that leads from Chicacao to Mazatenango, in Suchitepéquez. The truck where the Cubans were traveling, a motorcycle and a van were involved in the crash, the note stated.

The IGM statement also noted thatLópez Miranda will undergo surgery, “to accommodate a metal plate due to the fracture he suffered in one of his arms.”
Likewise, he indicated that the Cuban has already contacted his wife and daughter who reside in Havana.
Later, the note reiterates that López Miranda “was emphasized support for humanitarian reasons.”
The IGM assured that since Saturday it "supports the investigation related to the accident and the efforts before the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the repatriation process of the victims."
The Cubans who died in the accident, who were identified by the authorities from the beginning, areOsmani González Brooch, 54 years old and originally from Villa Clara;Marleny Hernandez Alfonso (46, Camagüey);Luis David Baños Lamadrid (25, Havana);Ihanosky López Pérez (38, Ciego de Ávila) andLuisa Reinosa Castillo (57, Havana).
This Monday, the death ofDisney Alejandro Sandín Hernández, 23 years old and native of Santiago de Cuba.
In addition, the authorities identified the CubansDaicel Arzola Herrera, 37 years old and originally from Havana;Javier Pérez Toledo, 31, Havana; andArletis Velazquez Ramirez, 31, Holguín, according to recentGuatemalan press reports.
Two Guatemalans also died in the accident.
The group of immigrants was overcrowded in the vehicle that was taking them to the border with Mexico, from where they intended to continue their journey to reach the United States, in their desperate search for a better life.
The Embassy of Cuba in the Republic of Guatemala said in aofficial note published on Saturday that wasin communication with the competent authorities and "available to contact the families of the victims and provide consular assistance" to the Cubans involved in the unfortunate event.
The statement did not offer other details about what happened, nor did it identify by name the fatal victims of Cuban origin in the accident.
In the last two years there have been several reports oftraffic accidents involving migrants, including Cubans, while they advance by land towards the southern border of the United States.
