Deaths reported due to accident on the Malecón in Havana

Why are there so many accidents in Cuba?

“It just happened on Malecón and Avenida de los Presidentes. Inside [the vehicle] were two people, a minor and apparently the father. The minor was alive and the father is unknown.", wrote inFacebook Internet user Ismarys Carballo, who reported the incident and shared some images of the intervention of the firefighters and police at the scene.

In shared photosIt appears that the vehicle apparently collided with a streetlight. The impact was such that the injured parties needed the active intervention of firefighters to be removed from the car.

In the comments section of the Bus & Truck Accidents Facebook group where the information was reproduced, an Internet user identified as Michael Mok Fernández stated that the event happened on the corner of his house, andHe reiterated that at least one of those traveling in the car died.

"At my house's corner.At the curve of Malecón and G, pavement wet from the rain. The driver died. The one who was next to them was taken alive, but in quite bad condition."said Mok Fernández, who did not indicate that the other accident victim was a minor, although he did specify that the car had to be practically disassembled into pieces.

The Internet user also specified that the firefighters and the police acted quickly, but not the ambulance, which "did take a while."

In the comments section of the aforementioned publicationAn Internet user declared the two people traveling in the car dead, although he did not offer further details.

At the closing of this note, the actual number of deaths in the incident is unknown. It must be remembered that the Cuban media does not usually publicly report traffic accidents except in cases where they are massive accidents, which is why social networks become the basic source of accidents on Cuban roads.

The Havana Malecón: fast and dangerous route

The danger of the Malecón in Havana has been a matter of debate since May 2019. Five people died in an accident that occurred at 23rd and Malecón, when a speeding almendrón hit a group of people who were sitting on the wall of the iconic avenue.

In recent years, other accidents have been recorded on the Malecón, some of them involving pedestrians trying to cross the avenue without success. It must be taken into account that the Malecón is a fast road with few possibilities to cross it safely, since it does not have pedestrian crossings.

In June of this yearAt least one person died and another was seriously injured. after trying to cross near the Ameijeiras Hospital, in the Centro Habana municipality. According to the witness report, in that case the victim was a pedestrian who had been hit by a car that was traveling along the Malecón in an area that is not usually very lit.

In September 2019,a man died and a girl he was carrying was injured after being run over while crossing the Malecón at night at Belascoaín Street, in Central Havana. In that case, the victim was crossing the street from the Malecón sidewalk towards Maceo Park when he was hit by a Transtur bus. As a result of the impact, the man fell towards the vehicle path that is closest to the Park, and a convertible almendrón came along and fatally ran him over.
