The Cuban activistYamilka Lafita, known on social networks as Lara Crofs, started a campaign on the Internet to obtain a humanitarian visa forThiago Fernando, a child who suffers from a degenerative disease for which there is no treatment on the Island.
Lara, who led the campaign that allowed thedeparture for Spain of the girl Amanda Lemus Ortiz to undergo a liver transplant, has now begun a similar action for this nine-year-old boy who suffers from Duchenne syndrome (muscular dystrophy that worsens rapidly).
As he explained, there used to be a possible solution for the boy in Cuba, but for about three months there is no longer one, because due to lack of supplies and medical personnel they closed the stem cell program at the William Soler pediatric hospital where he was being treated.
"Thiago has the document that confirms that they cannot treat him here in Cuba," Lara revealed.
The minor has been cared for since he was three years old and during this time his condition has gradually worsened. "He has an progression of the disease at nine years old that would begin to be seen at 13 or 14 years old," he said.
The young woman revealed that they already got a new wheelchair for the boy, who can barely walk. In addition, he has food absorption problems and suffers from attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADD), a chronic neurodevelopmental condition characterized by attention deficit, impulsivity, and motor hyperactivity.
Lara specified that he has not yet decided how the money will be collected, but it is clear that there are treatments for Thiago abroad, and he clarified that the money raised would not be to pay for medical care, but to support the mother and her son once outside Cuba.
"What Thiago needs is a humanitarian visa. Now we are going to think about how to channel that so that it happens as quickly as possible and that the child can leave Cuba as soon as possible," he stressed.
At the end of March, Frida Riverón, Thiago's mother, reported that her son has been worse since February, when he was subjected to asurgery for a stem cell implant and an alleged medical error occurred which resulted in the loss of mobility on the left side of his body.
"The second part of the process was not carried out as they should, since the medical staff at 11:00 pm was not complete," he said on Facebook.
According to her testimony, the absence of professionals led the doctors to make decisions that harmed her son; instead of using a deep vein to administer medication, they used a superficial vein in one hand, which was insufficient.
The boy who lives in Havana also suffers from permanent respiratory failure and generalized scoliosis, which has caused him to lose muscle mass.
His mother has repeatedly denounced thatThe government neglects his son, for all this he begs for humanitarian aid.
