Prison without bail for a 15-year-old teenager who caused the death of two Cuban women in an accident in Hialeah

The judge considered that the young man represents a danger to the community.

The 15-year-old teenager responsible for the death of two Cuban women in a traffic accident in Hialeah must remain in prison until trial.

Maykoll Santiesteban He appeared in Criminal Court on Wednesday, where Judge Mindy Glazer determined that He will have to remain in custody without bail.

Maykoll faces two counts of vehicular manslaughter, three counts of driving with a suspended license causing harm and one count of reckless driving. The prosecution pointed out that they are serious crimes and asked that he not be released under any circumstances.

For his part, the defense attorney argued that his client is an eighth grade student, has no criminal record, does not present a flight risk and has cooperated with authorities since he was detained.

Finally, Judge Glazer agreed with the accusing party and concluded that the young man represents a danger to the community and denied him bail.

"He killed two people by making a conscious decision to drive a vehicle without a license, without a permit, to basically step on and accelerate the vehicle as fast as he could and just two seconds before the accident he let off the pedal. I believe he is a danger to the community," argued the magistrate, cited by America TeVe.

On Tuesday, It was confirmed that the boy will be tried as an adult, after a judge transferred him from juvenile to adult court.

The fatalities of the tragic accident, which occurred on April 24, are Yarina García Hernández, 39, and her aunt Gloria Esther Hernández, 71. In the car with them was Liliana Hernández Molina, Yarina's mother, 65 years old, who remains in critical condition in a Miami hospital.

The women were out shopping when they were hit by Santiesteban, who was driving a pickup truck at high speed, near the corner of Southeast 4th Street and 5th Avenue.

Defense lawyer Omar López assured Local 10 that Santiesteban and his family regret what happened and offer their deepest condolences to the relatives of the deceased.

"If I could hit the rewind button and make this not happen, my client would give anything to make that happen," he said.

The teenager's parents know that he could spend many years in prison.

"The family is obviously devastated, this is their only child," López lamented.

On the other hand, Osmeide Rodríguez, the son of Gloria Esther Hernández, said in the tribute to his aunt and cousin that the event cannot go unpunished and that although the person responsible is a minor, "it is already old enough for that person think about what he was doing."

According to the police report, seconds before the crash, the teen was driving 83 miles per hour, which is more than 50 miles over the speed limit at the intersection.
