More than 27,000 Cubans in "irregular migratory situation" were detected between January and May 2024 by the authorities of Mexico, placing the Caribbean nation in the tenth position among the countries with the most individuals identified in that condition during that period.

The National Institute of Migration (INM) reported on the social network X that a total of 27,404 Cubans in an irregular situation were detected in Mexico during the first five months of the year, out of a total of nearly 1.4 million people. Venezuela, with 377,401 migrants, is the country that contributes the most.

The INM statement indicates that people in "irregular migratory situation" come from 77 countries from the five continents, including both families and individuals traveling alone, as well as around 3,000 unaccompanied minors.

The unaccompanied minor migrants were from Venezuela, Guatemala, Honduras, Ecuador, El Salvador, Colombia, Haiti, and Nicaragua, and none from Cuba.

After Venezuela, the countries with the most reported irregular migrants are Guatemala (209,540), Honduras (144,499), Ecuador (136,699), Haiti (107,432), Colombia (70,371), El Salvador (52,636), Nicaragua (45,364), Peru (10,464), and Cuba (27,404).

They are followed by people from Senegal (20,847), Guinea (19,922), Dominican Republic (16,228), China (13,780), and Brazil (11,058).

According to the EFE news agency, the President of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López, recently denied the existence of an overflow of migratory flow in the country, despite these figures, the tightening of anti-immigrant measures by the United States Government, and the executive order of President Joe Biden, which restricts asylum applications and expedites deportations.

However, irregular migration intercepted by Mexico has tripled in the first quarter of the year to nearly 360,000 people amid increasing operations, EFE reported.

Last May, the governments of Cuba and Mexico met in Havana to address the irregular migratory crisis towards the United States, an issue that has kept Latin America in tension.

The calls to avoid taking dangerous routes, as well as the measures taken by the US administration regarding its southern border, were some of the topics discussed.
