Actor Carlos Massola, who passed away this Wednesday in Havana, directly experienced the censorship and disdain of the Cuban regime. Now, in his final farewell, his body remains at home hours after his death due to the absence of a hearse.
Diego Lázaro García Espinosa, a friend of the deceased artist, reported that hours after the death, the body remains inside his home, a situation that deepens the sorrow of the actor's mother, according to the news portal CubaNet.
García is handling the arrangements related to the actor's passing, Massola's mother reported to the news website.
The actor's friend went to the Infanta funeral home, but upon finding it closed, he was directed to the Zanja location. At this latter place, someone informed him that there were no available hearses to transport the body to the chapel and that, furthermore, the service would take some time.
"Although he prepared the authorization for the transfer, hours later no vehicle had arrived," reported CubaNet.
García requested the firefighters' assistance to bring Massola down due to his body size, according to his account, but they replied that they would only do so when the hearse arrived.
According to their statements: "Massola is in very poor condition at home, he died in a grim manner and could not endure more hours in his room."
Massola's mother expressed that what she wants most is for the body to be taken away so she can sit down and process everything that has happened, as she has been waiting alongside her son for the transfer since early morning.
The Cuban actor passed away this Wednesday in Havana at the age of 62. Fabio Corchado Borroto, an opposition figure and close friend of Massola, expressed his sorrow for the loss in a Facebook post.
"My brother Carlos Massola has just passed away. Yesterday he called me to tell me how unwell he was feeling, and this morning his mother called to inform me of his passing. Rest in peace, my brother. I am devastated," he expressed.
The news shocked the Cuban artistic community both on and off the island, who expressed their condolences to the actor's family, friends, and loved ones through social media following his passing.
In addition to his acting skills, in recent years Massola has harshly criticized the Cuban regime, which responded with censorship.
