The Cuban Police arrested a suspected criminal after he was caught in the act by the homeowner burglarizing the property in the Bahía neighborhood, in East Havana, last Sunday.
According to a report on Facebook from the profile “El Cubano Fiel,” linked to the Ministry of the Interior (MININT), on the night of July 28, “the owner of a house caught a miscreant in the act of stealing, who had entered his home with a false key.”
When discovered by the owner, the thief "had already seized clothing and a large sum of money," the publication specified.
"After they made a call to 106, a police patrol arrived and took the criminal into custody," he noted.
The publication shared a photograph of the young man, but did not reveal his name or other details.
In addition to the shortages of the most basic necessities and the rampant inflation in one of the worst economic crises the country has experienced, Cubans are also faced with an unprecedented rise in crime, with thefts, assaults, and violent crimes occurring almost daily.
Such a situation keeps the citizens on edge, who question the effectiveness of law enforcement in addressing crime and are often forced to act on their own to capture wrongdoers.
Recently, several cases have been reported of criminals caught in the act of stealing in homes or workplaces. The guard of a warehouse in Marianao, Havana, caught a young man while he was stealing in the establishment, and he pulled out a knife and threatened him.
Numerous violent assaults on motorcyclists have also come to light in order to steal their vehicles, which the criminals dismantle and transform in order to obtain illicit profits.
Recently, President Miguel Díaz-Canel acknowledged the increase in violence, crime, and drug-related offenses in the country.
