A 30-year-old Cuban and his two-year-old daughter passed away this weekend in the municipality of Amancio Rodríguez, in Las Tunas, apparently due to a gas leak from a power plant, according to local authorities.

The two fatalities have been identified as Enrique Hernández Zulueta and little Vanesa Hernández Ortiz.

The mother of the minor, Denia Ortiz Rivera, 31 years old, was found with shortness of breath and chest pain, but alive, according to the official report.

The tragic incident occurred in a house located on "20 Aniversario" street, in the town of Camblor, belonging to Circumscription No. 58 of the Popular Council "La Carretera," in the mentioned municipality of Tunero.

The information specifies that in the bathroom of the house, the body of Enrique Hernández Zulueta was found, and in the bed, in the arms of the mother, was the two-year-old girl, Vanesa Hernández.

The official source specified that the unfortunate accident occurred "due to the escape of carbon monoxide from a 1200-watt electric generator, brand Saco, owned by the family, which was generating electricity during the night inside the home."

"On behalf of the authorities of the Party, the Government, and the people of Tunero, we offer our deepest and most sincere condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the victims of this tragic event," the note concluded, specifying that the investigation into the case remains open.

Since mid-2022, the Cuban government authorized the non-commercial importation of power plants over 900 watts due to the acute energy crisis on the island, which since then seemed to have no end.

In recent days, blackouts in Cuba have experienced an intensified crisis due to the simultaneous breakdown of several thermal units, which resulted in blackouts exceeding 1,000 MW for several days.

Unfortunately, this is not the first tragedy of this kind that has shaken a Cuban family in the last year.

In August 2023, a couple of Cubans, residing in this case in the state of Michigan, United States, died in a tragic home accident after suffocating from carbon monoxide emitted by a portable electric generator.

In that case, the family had been victims of power outages in their home due to the passing of a tornado, which led them to use a borrowed generator that ultimately became a deadly weapon.
