Some areas of the city of Santa Clara woke up this Monday under a cloud of smoke that still lingers today in certain areas, according to reports on social media.

Visibility was affected in some areas, and the smell of burning spread throughout the city, causing discomfort to residents, especially those with respiratory issues.

The official communicator Henry Omar Pérez indicated in a Facebook post that the cause of the dense and persistent column of smoke that covered part of the city of Santa Clara was two fires: one at the municipal landfill and another in a nearby forested area close to Los Caneyes.

Joint forces from the community services were mobilized to control and extinguish the fire at the landfill.

At the same time, firefighters intervened in the forest fire near Los Caneyes.

The situation sparked a wave of comments on social media, where citizens expressed their concern and discomfort over a phenomenon that, according to reports, has become recurrent in the city.

"I called the firefighters because I suffer from asthma and was having difficulty breathing. They replied that it was a government issue and that it would last until morning. I also contacted the police, and a young voice told me they were not the firefighters. This is how we are in our province of Santa Clara," recounted a concerned neighbor.

"This is no longer surprising in Santa Clara; it has become something normal and everyday. Our lungs are completely damaged"; "It was madness. My little girl is asthmatic and couldn't stop coughing. Inside the house, there was an unbearable smell of smoke," affirmed two other residents in the city.

As of the time this report was filed, the cause of both fires is unknown.
