The Intermediate Care Unit of the Camilo Cienfuegos Provincial General Hospital in Sancti Spíritus experienced a fire this Monday that did not result in any casualties, but the causes are being investigated by agents from the Ministry of the Interior.
The fire originated in the medical room, resulting in the loss of a television, personal belongings of the medical staff, an air conditioner, and other equipment, as explained by the center's director, Aliosky Polo Santana, to the state-run newspaper Escambray.
Polo Santana also confirmed that no damages were reported in the surrounding areas, and that critically ill patients were moved to other sections of the hospital to ensure their care.
The fire in the intermediate therapy room of the provincial hospital in Sancti Spíritus was the third of medium proportions reported at the facility, local radio added. The information prompted a comment from a reader who blamed the incident on the lack of maintenance of the hospital facilities on the Island.
"Maybe there will be five or six more fires. In any case, no one is interested in the consequences, as they are not a source of income for the country, and since the lives at stake are those of Cubans, then that’s their problem," wrote the internet user who claims to be named Eloy Bonet.
On February 2nd, the intermediate care unit of the Sancti Spíritus hospital experienced another fire similar to the one on Monday.
In March of last year, the same hospital reported another fire. On that occasion, it occurred in the pantry area of the intermediate care room, and just like this week, there were no injuries, although there were some partial material damages. At that time, the hospital director attributed the flames to "a gas leak."
The largest fire reported this week in Cuba also occurred this Monday in Placetas (Villa Clara), when four homes caught fire, resulting in no casualties, only material damage. Two of the houses sustained partial damage, while the other two were completely consumed by the flames.
Last Saturday, a severe fire broke out in sugarcane areas near the boundaries of the Honduras sugar mill, in the municipality of Manuel Tames, Guantánamo. Authorities attributed it to "social indiscipline" by citizens who chose to burn already harvested areas. The flames were so intense that they necessitated traffic disruptions in the vicinity.
