As three years have passed since the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the country commemorates this milestone with a blend of sorrow, resilience, and gratitude.
The president Volodimir Zelenski expressed in a message: "Three years of resistance. Three years of gratitude. Three years of absolute heroism from the Ukrainians. I am proud of Ukraine! I thank all those who defend and support it. To all those who work for Ukraine. And may the memory of all who gave their lives for our state and our people be eternal."
Since February 24, 2022, Ukraine has faced monumental challenges. What was initially expected to be a swift Russian victory has turned into a protracted conflict, showcasing the determination and bravery of the Ukrainian people.
The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense emphasized: "Three years of large-scale invasion. Each of us remembers February 24, 2022. Ukraine has not only resisted but has become stronger. Russia planned to defeat us in 72 hours, but today Russia is suffering catastrophic losses."
The international community has played a crucial role in supporting Ukraine. Military and humanitarian assistance from various countries has been essential in sustaining Ukraine's defense. However, recent changes in U.S. foreign policy have raised concerns.
The administration of President Donald Trump has initiated direct negotiations with Russia, excluding Ukraine and its European allies. These discussions have raised concerns about potential territorial concessions that Ukraine might be forced to accept.
According to reports, Trump has suggested that Ukraine cede the exploitation of critical minerals in exchange for continuing to receive military assistance. This shift in U.S. policy has been met with skepticism and alarm both in Ukraine and Europe.
President Zelenski has expressed his willingness to seek security guarantees (even stepping down from the presidency), while European leaders feel sidelined in key decisions regarding the security and reconstruction of Ukraine.
The possibility that the United States will reduce its military support to Ukraine presents an uncertain scenario, especially as the country heavily relies on Western assistance to sustain its defense.
Despite these challenges, the morale and determination of the Ukrainian people remain strong, as evidenced by the countless statements from Zelenski encouraging his European partners to maintain their own security approach, in light of the threat posed by the distancing from Washington and Trump's rapprochement with Vladimir Putin.
On the ground, the war has had a significant human and material cost. It is estimated that Ukraine has lost approximately 430,000 soldiers and civilians since the onset of the conflict.
Additionally, the country's infrastructure has suffered extensive damage, and the economy has been severely impacted. Nevertheless, the Ukrainian resistance has managed to thwart Russian advances, turning what was expected to be a rapid occupation into a prolonged war of attrition.
The international community now faces the challenge of maintaining its support for Ukraine amid geopolitical changes and internal pressures. The unity and determination demonstrated thus far will be crucial to securing a fair and lasting resolution to the conflict. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian people continue to show an indomitable spirit, determined to defend their sovereignty and future.
