"The crash of an AirCare helicopter in northern Madison County on Monday took the lives of two members of the care team from the University of Mississippi Medical Center and the pilot from Med-Trans," they reported.

The helicopter, identified as AirCare 3 and based in Columbus, had traveled to the Medical Center to transport a patient and was on its way back to Columbus when the accident occurred.

However, so far the authorities have not disclosed the identities of the victims to respect the privacy of their families.

The Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs at the University of Mississippi, Dr. LouAnn Woodward, expressed her sorrow over the tragedy.

"You never know what a day may bring, but today has been a terrible tragedy and a loss for the family of the Medical Center."

"Their families have been notified, and we want to express our deepest condolences. The entire Medical Center family is heartbroken over this. We also want to express our concern, sorrow, and support for the AirCare team," he added.

For his part, the state governor, Tate Reeves, issued a message on social media expressing his solidarity with those affected.

"The First Lady of Mississippi, Elee Reeves, and I are praying for the victims of the helicopter accident that happened today in Madison County. Please keep the families and coworkers of the victims in your prayers," she wrote.

Reeves also highlighted the bravery and commitment of the rescuers: "It is a tragic reminder of the risks that Mississippi rescuers face every day to keep us safe. Our state will never forget the sacrifice of these heroes."

The cause of the accident is still under investigation. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board have been notified and are working to clarify the details.
