A small Piper PA-28-181 aircraft made an emergency landing on Wednesday afternoon in a field adjacent to Coconut Palm Elementary School in Miramar, Broward County.
On board the aircraft were the pilot and a student, who managed to escape unscathed after the maneuver.
According to the chief of the Miramar Police, Delrish Moss, the airplane was flying at approximately 1,000 feet when the crew detected a malfunction in the engine.
During the emergency descent, the aircraft brushed against a fence and passed between two portable classrooms before touching down, losing its front wheel in the process.
Fortunately, moments before the incident, the students who were in the courtyard had returned inside the building, which prevented a possible accident.
The incident occurred at approximately 1:13 pm in a residential area located at 13601 Monarch Lakes Boulevard.
The city firefighters reported that the device fell in a field behind the school.
The images show the small plane in a green area near a parking lot. Although no significant structural damage is evident, it has been confirmed that it did sustain some damage.
The emergency teams from Miramar Fire Rescue and the Police quickly arrived at the scene to address the situation.
"The school has not been placed on lockdown and the incident is not affecting traffic in the area," reported Miramar Police spokesperson Janice McIntosh in an official statement.
Detectives from the Miramar Police, along with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and other agencies, have launched an investigation to determine the exact causes of the mechanical failure that forced the emergency landing.
