The General Directorate of Migration (DGM) of the Dominican Republic detained five Cuban immigrants and three Indians for violations of immigration regulations after they entered the country illegally from Haiti.

The Cubans, identified as Alieska Aguilera Díaz, Cristian Aguilera García, Cristopher González González, Ariday González Barata, and Diego Fernández Hernández, were intercepted in Dajabón by immigration interdiction agents while boarding a bus headed to the National District, cited Diario Libre.

According to the authorities, they entered irregularly from Haiti through the northern border area.

On the other hand, Indian citizens Patel Param Phafulchandra, Patel Krish Ghanshyamhai, and Patel Naitil Khodabhai legally entered the Dominican Republic through Las Américas Airport.

However, they later attempted to enter Haiti without legal authorization and were detained by Haitian authorities and deported back to Dominican territory through the binational gate of Elías Piña.

The General Directorate of Migration reported that following the arrest, an investigation was carried out into the immigration status of each of those involved before their deportation to their respective countries of origin. Additionally, entry restrictions to the Dominican Republic were imposed for violating Immigration Law 285-04 and its regulations.

The authorities are also seeking to determine possible connections between the group and human trafficking networks and organized crime, especially in the case of Indian citizens who attempted to cross the southern border irregularly.

The Dominican government has intensified its immigration controls at the border with Haiti, deporting over 276,000 irregular foreigners in 2024.

However, more and more Cubans are risking their lives to reach that territory, as they could travel to Haiti without a visa.

In the last five years, Cubans have become the foreign community with the highest number of naturalizations in the Dominican Republic, even surpassing Haitians, whose migratory presence has historically been the largest in that Caribbean country.
