The Provincial Department of Education in Santiago de Cuba confirmed that on the night of Sunday, April 27, several individuals broke into the Antonio Maceo Grajales Vocational Pre-University Institute of Exact Sciences (IPVCE), creating moments of tension and alarm among the students.
During the attempt to evade the intruders, a student sustained serious injuries when jumping from the second to the first level of the building. The young man was immediately transported to Hospital Infantil Sur Dr. Antonio María Béguez César, where he remains reported in critical condition at the time of writing this note.
The relevant authorities are already investigating the facts to clarify the circumstances of the incident and ensure that all appropriate measures are taken against those responsible for this reprehensible event.
Despite the unfortunate incident, the Provincial Education Directorate announced that educational activities at the IPVCE will continue as scheduled in the school calendar.
The independent communicator Yosmany Mayeta Labrada shared on Facebook the initial information about the incident through his social media, where he gathers various hypotheses that have emerged based on testimonies from students and individuals close to the center.
According to one of them, young people from the San Juan neighborhood, close to the school, had entered the premises seeking revenge after having received a previous prank from some students.
Armed with knives and machetes, they would have caused a confrontation inside the institution, Mayeta emphasized.
During the altercation, a student, in an attempt to escape from the attackers, reportedly climbed onto the ledge of a building and jumped into the void, sustaining serious injuries to the head, mouth, and nose.
Another version reported by the communicator states that one of the young outsiders entered the dormitory of a tenth-grade student, assaulted him, injured him with a knife, and allegedly threw him from a considerable height, which would explain the severity of the injuries sustained.
Witnesses indicated that classmates quickly helped the injured young man and managed to take him to the street, where he was assisted by an ambulance that happened to be passing by and took him immediately to a medical facility.
Mayeta emphasized that she is in contact with medical and educational sources to confirm more details about the case, while keeping the identity of the affected individual confidential out of respect for their privacy and that of their family.
The reports also indicate that the security conditions at the school were inadequate and that, despite previous incidents involving unauthorized individuals entering the premises, no effective measures had been taken to prevent situations like the one that occurred.
