Three black bears were shot by wildlife officers in southwest Florida following a fatal attack that cost the life of an 89-year-old man and his dog, authorities reported on Tuesday.
According to the report by NBC Miami, the incident occurred in a rural area east of Naples, just south of the Big Cypress wildlife management area.
The victim has been identified as Robert Markel, who was attacked near his home in the early hours of Monday.
The attack prompted the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) to launch an immediate operation in the area, where cameras and traps were set up overnight.
As a result, three black bears were sacrificed, highlighted the television report.
The authorities explained that the DNA from the animals and that collected from the scene of the attack was sent to a laboratory in Gainesville to confirm whether any of the specimens were directly responsible.
"For safety reasons, we urge the public to avoid the area and remain vigilant," stated the commission in an official statement.
Although Florida black bears were previously protected due to being threatened, their numbers have significantly increased in recent years, leading to a rise in their presence in residential areas and private properties, especially in rural regions of the northern and central parts of the state.
Authorities have not yet confirmed whether any of the sacrificed animals were directly involved in the attack, but they indicated that the decision was made to ensure the safety of the local community while investigations continue.
Other details of the attack: what the 911 calls and the police report reveal
According to new data obtained by the local outlet Fox 4 News, the brutal attack that claimed the life of 89-year-old Robert Markel occurred under dramatic circumstances.
In the 911 calls, the granddaughter of the deceased reported that the bear killed the family dog right in front of the house, before she went out to look for her grandfather.
Upon arriving at the trailer where Markel resided, he discovered that the elderly man was not there and that the dwelling had been destroyed.
"His RV was completely destroyed... he is not there. He is 89 years old, cannot run, can barely walk without falling," is heard in the call.
Moments later, the agents found his clothes stained with blood about 20 meters from the trailer, in the nearby forest.
Later, they found Markel's lifeless body about 100 meters from the house, covered with dirt and leaves, according to the report from the Collier County sheriff.
In one of the 911 calls, a family member reported that the presence of bears in the area was constant: “There are about 40 bears here. They come in and out every day... and now they decide to kill a dog and take someone away,” the visibly upset caller expressed.
The FWC stated that the case is still under investigation, and although three bears have already been taken down in the area, they will not stop until they accurately identify the culprit of the attack through genetic evidence.
