Díaz-Canel describes the Russian military response in Ukraine as "dignified."

Díaz-Canel defends Russia's actions in Ukraine and criticizes NATO's policies, accusing the West of promoting supremacism.

The ruler Miguel Díaz-Canel openly defended this week Russia's actions in the war in Ukraine, describing its military response as "worthy" and necessary in light of what he considers a direct threat from the "aggressive and expansionist policies of NATO."

The statements were made during a special edition of the Mesa Redonda program on Cuban Television, on the eve of the 80th anniversary of Victory Day against Nazism.

"Russia has faced with dignity the expansionist efforts of NATO, maintaining political and economic stability in the face of Western coercive measures," stated the leader in a conversation broadcast jointly with RT en Español.

Díaz-Canel also responded to comments from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who had warned that Ukraine would not be responsible for the safety of the leaders attending the commemorative events in Moscow.

In this context, the Cuban leader declared that “We are here out of conviction, without fear and supporting what is right. Defending what is right,” in reference to his participation in the tributes in Russia.

During the interview, Díaz-Canel expressed his support for the Kremlin, accusing the West of promoting a societal model based on "supremacism, elitism, and the criminalization of social protest," which he believes has fueled the growth of global far-right movements and the emergence of modern forms of fascism.

This week, Díaz-Canel traveled to Moscow, where he participated in a dinner at the Russian government headquarters as a guest of Vladimir Putin's regime.

Additionally, Cuba has continued to support its old ally in the international forums that condemn the invasion of Ukraine.

The island has also failed to respond coherently to the reports of Cuban mercenaries recruited by Russia, despite many of its citizens claiming that they were deceived into fighting in the war against Ukraine.

Why does Díaz-Canel describe the Russian military response in Ukraine as "dignified"?

Díaz-Canel believes that Russia's response in Ukraine is "worthy" because, in his view, it appropriately confronts the "aggressive and expansionist policies of NATO." The Cuban president views the Russian action as a necessary defense against threats perceived by Moscow. This stance reflects Cuba's political alignment with Russia in a context of increasing international tension.

What is the purpose of Díaz-Canel's visit to Russia?

Díaz-Canel's visit to Russia aims to participate in the celebrations of the 80th anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany and to strengthen the political and economic ties between the two countries. The visit also highlights Cuba's support for Russian policies and its pursuit of strategic backing. In the context of an internal crisis in Cuba, the rapprochement with Russia represents a strategy to obtain resources and political support.

What agreements have been signed between Cuba and Russia during this visit?

During Díaz-Canel's visit to Russia, agreements have been signed that include the delivery of Moskvich vehicles to improve transportation in Cuba and cooperation in strategic sectors such as energy and defense.
