The American organization Spanky Project supports the sterilization of over 500 animals in Havana

More than 500 animals were sterilized in Havana thanks to a campaign supported by Spanky Project USA, volunteers, and Cuban organizations, in a joint effort for animal welfare.

A massive and free campaign for the sterilization of dogs and cats, organized at the Quinta de Los Molinos in Havana, has managed to benefit over 500 animals in just six days, setting a new record for interventions in a single day.

The effort has been made possible thanks to the collaboration of the American organization Spanky Project USA, in partnership with Cuban institutions and a wide network of volunteers dedicated to animal welfare.

According to the report from the heritage and ecological space Quinta de Los Molinos on its official Facebook profile, last Friday there were 136 sterilizations recorded in a single day, surpassing the previous record of 131 achieved during the 2024 campaign.

So far, 512 pets have been sterilized, with the participation of dozens of veterinarians and volunteer students, the institution emphasized.

The initiative is part of an alliance between Spanky Project USA, the Office of the Historian of the City of Havana, the NGO Heritage, Community and Environment, and the Network of Cuban Heritage Cities, with logistical support from Pabexpo, Official of the PALCO Business Group.

The news agency Inter Press Service reported on Facebook that on May 12, nearly 50 veterinarians and students are actively participating in the campaign, which was announced in April via social media.

In addition to reducing uncontrolled reproduction, specialists indicate that sterilization contributes to a longer and healthier life for pets, as it prevents diseases such as uterine infections and certain types of cancer.

Spanky Project, with over 20 years of humanitarian work in Cuba, has been instrumental in promoting animal welfare in cities such as Havana and Trinidad.

Their presence in this campaign reaffirms their commitment to local communities and respect for animal life.

The campaign not only represents a concrete advance in the ethical control of animal populations but also serves as a model of cooperation between Cuban civil society and the international community, in a context where state institutions provide limited resources for animal care.

From the Quinta de Los Molinos publicly thanked the collective effort that has made these results possible: “Thank you all for your tremendous effort!” concluded the official statement.
