A woman was left lying on the pavement, with severe injuries, in the heart of Little Havana, Miami, after being struck by a vehicle whose driver fled the scene without providing assistance.

The traffic incident occurred last Friday at around 4:50 a.m. at the intersection of Southwest 7th Street and 8th Avenue, reported Telemundo 51.

When the Miami Police Department officers arrived at the scene, they found the victim lying on the street, surrounded by the debris of a destroyed scooter. Paramedics immediately proceeded to stabilize the woman, who was transported in critical condition to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital.

A witness of the tragic event, identified as Oscar Vega, told the television channel that he was waiting at the traffic light next to the victim when the driver of an SUV did not stop at the red light and violently struck the woman.

"He didn't even stop. He didn't care. He just ran her over and left," Vega stated, who promptly called 911.

"I tried to memorize details of the vehicle, but it left too quickly," the man said, who assisted the woman who was hit until the medical personnel arrived.

Kenia Delva, spokesperson for the Miami Police Department, reported that investigators were reviewing surveillance cameras in the area to try to identify the person suspected of the hit and run.

The laws of the state of Florida classify leaving the scene of a traffic accident that resulted in death or bodily injury to any person as a felony.

The driver responsible for a "hit and run" could face criminal charges and be sentenced to up to 15 years in prison or probation, as well as a fine of $10,000 and suspension of their driver's license.
