The Cuban government unveiled a new drone designed to combat fires as part of the military and civil defense exercise Meteoro 2025, carried out this Saturday in the country.
The demonstration of the team was part of a drill aimed at testing Cuba's technological capabilities in the face of natural disasters and emergencies related to climate change, as reported by the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (MINFAR) on its profile.
In the image shared by MINFAR, a multirotor drone can be seen in action as it releases water through a system connected to a hose. This type of technology aims to complement firefighting efforts in areas that are difficult to access or have adverse conditions for ground equipment.
"Cuba is preparing for climate challenges! [...] Under the guidance of President Miguel Díaz-Canel and the National Defense Council, strategies were updated to protect the population and reduce risks," MINFAR published on social media.
The Meteoro is a strategic exercise promoted by the Cuban government to enhance the country's ability to respond to hurricanes, forest fires, landslides, and other extreme events that could intensify with the onset of the cyclone season.
Although technical details about the drone model have not been revealed, such as its flight autonomy, range, or payload capacity, the Cuban government described the test as an example of the national commitment to security, innovation, and disaster prevention.
In the exercise, representatives from the FAR, the Ministry of the Interior (MININT), the Civil Defense, and other state agencies participated. The drills included evacuation simulations, deployment of technical resources, and updates to territorial emergency plans.
This exercise takes place in a context of increasing environmental vulnerability for the Island, which in recent years has faced large-scale fires, such as the one that occurred in 2022 at the Base de Supertanqueros de Matanzas, one of the worst industrial disasters in its history.
