Cuban in Tampa teaches how to make africanitas in five minutes and goes viral on TikTok: "I'm trying to eat healthy, but they're not helping."

"They remain special," he assured in the video that left more than one person salivating.

A Cuban pastry chef based in Tampa has gone viral on TikTok by demonstrating a quick and easy way to prepare africanitas, the popular chocolate-covered treat that evokes childhood memories for many Cubans. In her video, posted under the username @darislatinbakery, the young woman teaches how to make these delights "in just five minutes," using ingredients that are easy to find in any Latin market in the United States.

"Let's head to the nearest Latino market to buy these delicious little cakes," the creator begins, also demonstrating how to melt chocolate coating —Walmart brand, as she notes— and dip the cakes using a homemade technique. The process concludes by placing the pieces on parchment paper, resulting in a mouthwatering finish, although she humorously admits, "They didn't turn out very pretty, they could be improved, but I assure you they are delicious."

The clip, just over a minute long, has garnered thousands of reactions, mostly positive, and sparked a flood of comments among users eager to recreate the recipe or simply reminisce about childhood flavors.

Reactions on TikTok: between nostalgia and craving

User comments reflect enthusiasm and nostalgia. "Thank you, I was dying to eat them. I'll make them!" commented one follower. "Look how easy they are to make, I would have never imagined. You can also make tiramisu with those cakes," added another. Practical questions poured in: "What chocolate did you use, my dear?", and "Where can I buy the cakes?" asked several curious individuals who were already ready to give it a try.

There were also those who joked about how difficult it is to stick to a diet after watching the video: “Me trying to eat healthy but they don’t help. I’m heading to Walmart!” wrote one user with laughter. Others, more skeptical, asked if the africanitas aren't "soggy," but most agreed that the video gives "a great idea" and is "very well explained."

A success that is not new: chiviricos and coquitos also triumphed

This is not the first time that Dari, the creator of Dari’s Latin Bakery, has gone viral with traditional Cuban recipes. Last January, her recipe for chiviricos cubanos captivated thousands with a preparation that only requires water, sugar, flour, and eggs. “You took me back to elementary school, at 4:20, when they cost 1 peso,” commented a follower moved by nostalgia at the time.

Months earlier, in August 2024, her recipe for coquitos acaramelados once again showed that Cuban cuisine, when shared with love and simplicity, can evoke deep emotions.

Sweets with the flavor of Cuba... and home

The success of @darislatinbakery lies not only in the simplicity of its recipes but also in the strong emotional connection they evoke. For Cubans both on and off the island, each video is a gateway to memories: to school snacks, to street vendors, to the kitchens of mothers and grandmothers.

If you have cookies and chocolate coating on hand, it might be time to try making these "Africanitas" at home in just five minutes and indulge in a flavor that transcends borders.
