Great consternation among family and friends has been caused by the tragic death of a young Cuban this Thursday, in an accident involving a truck and the motorcycle he was riding, in San Juan y Martínez, Pinar del Río province, according to preliminary reports.

The tragic traffic accident that occurred at kilometer 4 of the San Juan highway, in the 7 Matas area, cut short the life of Leodan Miranda, confirmed members of his family, acquaintances, and witnesses on social media.

“EPD, cousin, life played a bad trick on you, no one should finish the race just after starting it, but what can we do with this harsh reality? We fall in love with life only to end up marrying death,” were the heartfelt words of his cousin Anger Madera on Facebook.

Eduardo Martínez, a friend of Miranda, also expressed his condolences for her sudden passing: “From a mother, my brother, how sad your news is, my brother. Life played a trick on you; may God watch over you in Heaven, rest in peace.”

Residents of the area where the accident occurred claimed to have witnessed the incident, but did not reveal details of what happened. One of them stated that the motorcycle "didn't suffer any damage, when it should have been the other way around."

As of now, the causes that led to the incident are unknown and it is unclear whether others were injured.

Miranda lived in San Juan and Martínez, and was very well-loved in the community, judging by the hundreds of messages that friends, neighbors, acquaintances, and others have posted on social media, expressing their sorrow for his untimely loss and sending condolences to his family.

Last weekend, there were also traffic accidents with fatalities reported in the provinces of Artemisa and Granma.

In the municipality of Bauta, Artemisa, one person lost their life and two were injured in the collision between a motorcycle and a car, on Saturday afternoon, in La Ernestina, near Punta Brava.

On the night of that same Saturday, a truck overturned while trying to avoid a cyclist in the municipality of Guisa, Granma, resulting in two fatalities and several injured.

Meanwhile, in the city of Bayamo, a bus collided with a motorcyclist who ignored a stop sign. Reports of the incident did not specify his health condition.

From January to April of this year, 2,377 traffic accidents were recorded in Cuba, 150 incidents fewer than in the first four months of 2024. The number of injuries also decreased; however, deaths from these incidents increased, according to authorities.
