The prominent Cuban actor Patricio Wood denied on Friday rumors circulating on social media about his alleged death in a traffic accident at the Cojímar roundabout.
With a humorous phrase, the famous actor from films such as Los sobrevivientes by Tomás Gutiérrez Alea; Guardafronteras by Octavio Cortázar; Caravana by Rogelio París; El elefante y la bicicleta by Juan Carlos Tabío, declared that he is alive and was not involved in an accident.
"Well, my big family on Facebook and all the networks what they're saying is false, of course, I'm fine, nothing happened. I'm not at the Cojímar roundabout," he said, adding: "That's a lame excuse!", using a phrase used in the game of hide and seek. When someone would reveal a player's hiding spot, they would shout "lame excuse" and be penalized.
Wood, 64 years old, is alive, as his video shows. Hundreds of internet users celebrated that it was just a hoax and thanked the actor for debunking the rumor.
The Agencia Caricatos also called for "respect" towards artists, urging Cubans not to spread falsehoods, to verify news sources, and to always seek official channels.
Patricio Wood was born in Havana in 1961 and graduated from the Higher Institute of Art in 1984. His early works included the adventures The Silent Commandos in 1968, and the film about the Literacy Campaign, The Brigadista, directed by Octavio Cortázar.
With Cortázar, he worked again on Guardafronteras, another film dedicated to highlighting events of the nascent socialist project established by Fidel Castro in Cuba. He repeated this type of work with the piece Caravana, created by director Rogelio París.
In television, he has participated in numerous series and telenovelas, including Salir de noche, La cara oculta de la luna, and Historias de fuego, among others. In 2021, he joined the cast of the series Tú, which was directed by Léster Hamlet.
One of Wood's sons, Gabriel, has followed the family tradition. The 28-year-old has already accumulated several significant roles in his career, and in addition to his leading role in the telenovela directed by Hamlet, he portrayed General Julio Sanguily in the film El Mayor, which is dedicated to the life of Ignacio Agramonte.
