The Republican congresswoman María Elvira Salazar has reiterated that she has the "solution" to the migration chaos in the U.S., and has emphasized that the way forward is the Dignity Act, which she promises to present very soon.

"For a long time, the United States has turned a blind eye to a broken immigration system. Chaos at the border. Millions living in the shadows. Enough is enough. Inaction is not an option. We have been told there are only two options: amnesty or mass deportations. I propose a third: order, law, and dignity. The solution exists. It is called the DIGNITY Law. Coming soon…” wrote the legislator on X this Tuesday.

Last week, the Cuban-American congresswoman anticipated that, along with her Democratic colleague Veronica Escobar (TX-16), she is preparing a bipartisan legislative initiative aimed at reforming the immigration system in the United States.

The goal, as explained, is to "bring order to the chaos" generated by recent immigration policies, and to prevent further deportations of workers who have resided in the country for years.

Although the congresswoman did not provide specific details about the content of the proposal, she indicated that it will be presented before the end of the month and will be led by a bipartisan group of legislators seeking a comprehensive and realistic immigration reform.

The Dignity Law

The congresswoman has been trying for some time to advance her bill.

At the end of March, it was announced that the Dignity Act would be presented again, a proposed immigration reform dating back to 2023, which aims to provide a pathway to legalization for immigrants without criminal records who have lived and worked in the United States for at least five years.

In March, Salazar stated in a video posted on her X account that she had sent a letter to the administration of Donald Trump urging them to take care of those who have been in the country for over five years, contributing to the economy and with no criminal records; those who also "have American children, who have been paying taxes, who are working, helping the economy."

"Don't touch them," requested the congresswoman for those she considers "the silent heroes who are day after day doing the jobs that no one wants to do."

In her March address, she stated that she also asked to protect Cubans with I-220A, as well as Nicaraguans, Venezuelans, Haitians, and Cubans who have Temporary Protected Status (TPS).

However, he did not mention those who arrived through the humanitarian parole program implemented by Biden, which has been revoked.

Salazar has also intervened several times on behalf of Cubans who are in the U.S. with I-220A, a measure granted to thousands of migrants who have not received a definitive immigration status.

The congresswoman has requested that these cases be considered with greater flexibility, urging the government to provide them with the opportunity to regularize their situation. "These Cubans have come in search of freedom and should not be sent back to the dictatorship that oppresses them," she emphasized.
