A Cuban who was on the sidewalk this Friday, when a truck lost control in Pinar del Río and fell on several pedestrians, shared his traumatic experience of the accident in which four people lost their lives.
According to the testimony given to the official journalist Alina López Ochoa, Léster Ramón Garrido was left with injuries to his hands, arms, and leg after a truck surged towards him and several people at kilometer 2 of the road leading to Luis Lazo.
"I was on the sidewalk with a few friends when I noticed that the truck was dangerously approaching. I alerted everyone and ran to protect myself. The vehicle dragged the people who were on the sidewalk... miraculously, I escaped," said the man, while showing the injuries on his body.
The man's motorcycle was severely damaged after being struck by the trailer.
The images shared by the journalist also highlight the extent of the damage to the house where the truck struck. Several destroyed columns and broken steps were the aftermath of the tragic accident.
According to the local media Guamá, the incident occurred at 9:15 PM, at kilometer two of the Luis Lazo highway in Pinar del Río, when the driver of the trailer lost control on the road and collided with a group of people who were standing on the sidewalk in front of a house.
Among the deceased is the girl Miliany Pérez Javier, 9 years old, and the pregnant woman Anairis Sánchez Blanco, 24 years old, the media reported.
Additionally, three other individuals were injured, including the 10-year-old girl Marlenis Martínez Blanco, who is reported to be in serious condition.
Of the other injured individuals, one was in critical condition and has already undergone surgery, while the other was reported to be in stable condition and not in life-threatening danger.
The injured were taken to Abel Santamaría Cuadrado Hospital and, in the case of the girl, to Pepe Portilla Pediatric Hospital.
The driver responsible for the accident was arrested this Saturday.
