Three people lost their lives following the collapse of a multi-family building that occurred this morning at Monte 722, between Rastro and Carmen, in the capital municipality of Habana Vieja.
The news was announced early on Saturday by the pro-government Facebook profile Ransel Londres.
Just before the tragic announcement, the official source had indicated that forces from the Fire Department and the National Revolutionary Police (PNR) were working diligently on-site to gain access to the interior of the building, where three people were trapped.
She also mentioned that authorities from the Party, the local Government, community leaders, and neighbors also went to the site to coordinate and provide support during the rescue efforts.
As of the closing of this report, the identities of the deceased have not been disclosed, nor have any other details regarding the circumstances of the incident.
This new collapse highlights the serious deterioration of the housing stock in Havana, especially in historical areas such as Centro Habana and La Habana Vieja.
Thousands of buildings have structural damage, many of which are inhabited by families who face the daily risk of collapse.
Meanwhile, the contrast with urban reality is becoming increasingly evident: public investment continues to prioritize the construction of hotels and megaprojects in tourism, even in the same neighborhoods where homes are collapsing due to lack of maintenance.
The increase in hotel infrastructure does not translate into improvements for the residents, who face critical living conditions and, in many cases, lack alternatives.
Landslides are not isolated incidents, but rather part of a structural crisis that has accumulated over decades, exacerbated by a lack of materials, economic deterioration, and institutional neglect.
Each new collapse leaves victims, families affected, and an even more fractured social fabric.
Monte 722 adds to a long list of avoidable tragedies that reflect not only the fragility of buildings but also the shortcomings of a system unable to ensure minimum housing safety conditions.
