A migrant dies in the United States while trying to escape from ICE

The victim worked in agriculture.

A Mexican agricultural worker died after suffering catastrophic injuries during a massive raid conducted on July 10th in Ventura County, California.

The worker, identified by some outlets as Jaime García, fell from a height of approximately 30 feet (about 9 meters) while on the roof of a Glass House Farms facility, a company dedicated to the legal cultivation of cannabis in Camarillo.

The raid occurred during an operation conducted by immigration agents as part of an investigation into alleged violations of immigration laws and child labor, according to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

The injuries were severe: fractures in the neck and skull, along with a severed artery.

The man was admitted in critical condition to the Ventura County Medical Center, where he remained on life support for several days.

"We assumed they had caught him... but we received a call from the hospital saying that he is in critical condition, with catastrophic injuries," his niece recounted in statements reported by the U.S. press.

He later added: “His wife and parents decided today to let him rest. He has passed away.”

García was originally from the state of Michoacán and worked in California to send remittances to his family in Mexico.

His wife and daughter were notified. Over $31,100 was raised through a community campaign to cover medical expenses and the repatriation of his remains.

Position of the Government of Mexico

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE) of Mexico issued a statement expressing "its most sincere condolences to the family of the deceased compatriot." The foreign office reported that the Mexican Consulate in Oxnard has provided ongoing support and assistance, including:

-Support for families during the hospitalization period.

-Coordinating with the family in Michoacán to provide assistance and consular guidance.

-Management to expedite the repatriation of the remains.

-Link to the External Legal Advisory Program (PALE) to provide legal follow-up on the case.

The SRE reaffirmed its commitment to the protection of the human rights of Mexicans abroad.

He also recalled that the Consular Support Line is available 24/7 at the number 520 623 7874 from the United States.

Reports of abuse and discriminatory treatment

The United Farm Workers (UFW) reported that the raid was chaotic and violent, resulting in the hospitalization of four more individuals and medical attention on-site for three others. According to the union:

"There is no city, state, or federal district where it is legal to terrorize and detain people for having brown skin and working in agriculture."

The organization also reported that workers, including American citizens, were detained for up to eight hours. Some were forced to delete photos and videos from their phones.

The whereabouts of several employees, who continue to be reported as "completely missing," is still unknown.

Unprecedented raid and protests

According to the authorities, at least 200 people were arrested on the properties of Glass House Farms.

U.S. media characterize it as the largest immigration raid under the current federal administration.

Videos shared on social media show agents using heavy tactical gear. The owners of the affected farms criticized the disproportionate use of force, pointing out that the workers were not criminals.

The actions triggered protests in the area. Approximately 500 people demonstrated near the farms.

Authorities reported damage to patrol cars, the use of tear gas, and an incident involving a firearm by a protester.
