A new traffic accident occurred this Monday morning in the city of Santiago de Cuba, when a tourist car was wrecked after losing control on a dangerous curve.
Journalist Yosmany Mayeta Labrada reported on Facebook that the incident occurred on the street in Siboney, near the curve close to Algarrobo, very close to the local zoo.
The incident occurred when the vehicle, which was allegedly speeding, hit a bump and lost control while taking a curve.
"He was going over 100 km/h," said eyewitnesses who saw the car lose control and veer off the road, the reporter stated.
The shared images show the car completely damaged, with total loss of its front bodywork.
Residents of the area point to the poor condition of the road and the excessive speed as the main causes of the accident, in a stretch already known for its danger.
The vehicle involved appears to be a rental car for tourists, as indicated by the letter T on the license plate.
It is allegedly a Dongfeng Aeolus, a Chinese brand that has gained a foothold in the automotive landscape of Cuba, particularly in tourist rentals and state transportation.
Rental cars for tourists have frequently been involved in accidents on the Island.
They are often rented by Cubans living abroad who visit the country and, in many cases, travel on deteriorated roads with inadequate signage, in vehicles that lack optimal maintenance.
In the comments section, several internet users expressed their sorrow over the incident and agreed on the hazardous nature of the stretch of road and the irresponsibility behind the wheel.
“It's a dangerous stretch and the recklessness is increasing. It's vacation time and many children are around that area. We need to be aware,” wrote Yailin García Roger, upon noticing that the vehicle ended up on the sidewalk.
“It is true that the streets are in disrepair, but nothing justifies going at an inappropriate speed,” said Manuel Mateos Melis.
“No miraculously survived. Believe me, he thought he was on a plane. If they are alive, they were reborn,” commented Ariel La Sirenita KG.
For his part, Jorge Martínez Reinosa warned: “You have to go gently through there, because that slope is a bit damaged.”
Yanelis Pupo Lawrence shared a personal memory: “In that very spot, I lost a very dear person in a motorcycle accident.”
Traffic accidents continue to be one of the main causes of casualties in Cuba, reflecting a worrying level of accident rates on the roads, exacerbated by poor road infrastructure, reckless driving, and inadequate technical maintenance of many vehicles.
In Artemisa, an interprovincial bus overturned on the highway, leaving more than 20 people injured, including minors and foreign tourists.
Another tragic episode occurred at the entrance of Havana, where a private taxi was involved in a fatal collision that resulted in several fatalities after violently crashing into a truck.
A tragic accident between two motorcycles was also reported in the eastern part of the country, resulting in one fatality and one minor injured following a head-on collision on a rural road.
The lack of signage and the dangers posed by railway crossings without adequate safety conditions were highlighted in the incident that occurred near Expocuba, where a train collided with a car, causing several injuries from the collision.
In another recent incident, a state taxi of the Gazelle brand fell into a ditch after losing control on an interprovincial road.
These recent cases confirm that Cuba has high accident rates, a reality that jeopardizes road safety and constantly puts the lives of drivers, passengers, and pedestrians at risk. The combination of structural and human factors demands urgent action to curb this alarming trend.
