Two people lost their lives this Thursday in a tragic traffic accident that occurred on the ring road connecting to the municipality of Vertientes, in the province of Camagüey.

The victims were riding a motorcycle when they were struck by a car, according to eyewitnesses who spoke to journalist José Luis Tan Estrada.

The accident occurred to the right of the road after crossing the La Yaba bridge. Both occupants of the motorcycle died on the spot due to the severity of the impact.

Residents of the area known as La Georgina reported the incident and indicated that the vehicle involved was abandoned just a few meters from the scene, raising suspicions that the car may have been stolen.

Relatives and loved ones of the victims confirmed that one of the deceased, aged 32, was about to become a father. The young man, originally from Mayarí, was working in Camagüey.

The other fatality was identified as Pedro by a woman who claims to be his neighbor: "Very sad, my neighbor Pedro died there, so much pain and sadness, just like the other young man whose death also hurts me even though I didn’t know him."

After the accident, local authorities issued a warning to residents of the area, asking them to stay indoors and keep children inside while the whereabouts of the driver or possible responsible parties were investigated.

The area remained under surveillance while the initial investigations were underway.

The incident has caused shock among the inhabitants of Camagüey, not only due to the loss of human lives but also because of the context in which it occurred: an accident followed by vehicle abandonment, on a busy road, with indications of greater crimes such as the theft of a tourist vehicle.

This incident adds to the concerning statistics of accidents on Cuban roads, where motorcycles are among the most vulnerable vehicles.

Traffic accidents in Cuba are often caused by the recklessness of drivers, poor road conditions, and the lack of vehicle maintenance. Additionally, inadequate signage and adverse weather conditions, such as fog, are factors that increase the risk of incidents on the roads.

In June, another accident in Camagüey involved the provincial director of the Comunales Company in Camagüey, who sustained injuries that are not life-threatening. The vehicle he was traveling in was government-owned, which sparked criticism regarding the misuse of public resources.

The accident was caused by trying to dodge an electric tricycle, which led the driver to lose control of the vehicle and overturn. No other individuals were reported to be involved in the accident.
