The renowned Cuban boxer Yordenis Ugás emotionally shared the remarkable recovery of young Lester Domínguez, a victim of a brutal machete assault in Holguín in March 2023, when he was attacked in an attempt to steal his cell phone.
“More than a year ago, I saw his case on CiberCuba and got his number. I wrote to him and told him I wanted to be his friend,” recounted the Santiago boxer, one of the most active Cuban athletes on social media, where he frequently denounces the abuses of the Havana regime.
Since then, they have both kept in touch, and the champion has closely followed the young man's progress. “The first photos he sent me always brought me to tears,” he confessed on Facebook, while sharing a recent image that shows the impressive progress in his recovery.
Ugás, moved, expressed to Lester and his family his joy: "I told him that I was very happy for him and that God continue to bless him in his recovery."
At the same time, the boxer, who has an excellent amateur and professional career, criticized the increasing insecurity on the island: “Incredible the crime and theft in Cuba. But against the dictatorship that humiliates them, deprives them of electricity, and keeps them in misery, they don't raise their voices.”
A difficult process, supported by solidarity
Since the attack, Lester has had to undergo multiple interventions and treatments. His father, Dennis Domínguez, has been a key support, regularly updating on the young man's progress and expressing gratitude for the support received from both friends and Cubans in exile. Furthermore, he has denounced the shortcomings of the Cuban healthcare system and has insisted on the need to take his son out of the country for more appropriate care.
Despite the horror experienced, Lester's case has become a symbol of resistance and hope, and Ugás's gesture of solidarity once again highlights his commitment to humanitarian causes and the most vulnerable Cubans.
