Hospitals in various provinces have reactivated their patient care units for those with symptoms compatible with COVID-19, following the admission of dozens of individuals with respiratory conditions.

Although health authorities have not released official figures, medical personnel have confirmed an increase in admissions for symptoms compatible with the XFG variant, a descendant strain of Omicron that is highly contagious even in asymptomatic individuals, according to a report from the official radio station Radio Mambí.

The situation has led to an urgent call for the use of face masks in closed spaces, public transportation, workplaces, and areas with a high concentration of people.

Additionally, it is recommended to avoid crowds, maintain constant hand hygiene, and consult a doctor for any respiratory symptoms, no matter how mild.

Among the most common symptoms of the XFG variant, hoarseness, mild fever, dry cough, sore throat, and digestive discomfort are reported, which could hinder early detection as they may be mistaken for other common respiratory viruses.

In Sancti Spíritus, the authorities have also mandated the use of face masks in healthcare institutions due to the rise in respiratory illnesses.

Dr. Yurién Negrín Calvo, Deputy Director of Epidemiology at the Provincial Center for Hygiene, Epidemiology, and Microbiology, explained to the local newspaper Escambray that Sancti Spíritus is among the regions with a rise in the number of medical consultations due to Acute Respiratory Infections (ARI).

There have even been reports of severe cases in children under one year old and in elderly adults, although it was clarified that it has not been "different from what occurs in these extreme age groups."

The XFG variant

The doctor Francisco Durán, the main health spokesperson for the country, warned that “it is very likely that the XFG variant, also known as Stratus, is already circulating.”

The statement has heightened concern among the population and has prompted many workplaces to strengthen their prevention measures.

Despite the absence of an official statement regarding a new wave of infections, hospital reports and the mobilization of healthcare personnel indicate that health authorities are acting cautiously in response to a potential resurgence.

Although Durán García has not officially confirmed the presence of variant XFG in Cuba, it is possible that it is present due to its widespread global transmission and its ability to spread during the asymptomatic period.

It has also been stated that Cuban vaccines continue to provide effective protection against the XFG variant. There is an insistence on the importance of vulnerable groups completing their vaccination schedule and receiving booster doses.

Frequently asked questions about the health alert for the XFG variant in Cuba

What is the XFG variant and why is it concerning?

The XFG variant, also known as Stratus, is a subvariant of the coronavirus descended from Omicron. It stands out for its high transmission capability, even during the asymptomatic period, which complicates early detection. Although it has not been officially detected in Cuba, its presence is suspected due to its widespread global propagation. Its symptoms include hoarseness, mild fever, dry cough, sore throat, and digestive discomfort.

What measures are being recommended to prevent the spread of the XFG variant in Cuba?

The health authorities of Cuba have recommended several preventive measures to curb the potential spread of the XFG variant. The use of nasobuco (mask) has been mandated in enclosed spaces, public transport, and crowded places. In addition, it is advised to maintain constant hand hygiene, avoid crowds, and consult a doctor if any respiratory symptoms arise. There is also an emphasis on completing the vaccination schedule and receiving booster doses, particularly for vulnerable groups.

Are the Cuban vaccines effective against the XFG variant?

Cuban vaccines have proven to maintain effectiveness against the XFG variant. Dr. Francisco Durán has emphasized the importance of vulnerable groups completing their vaccination schedule and receiving booster doses to enhance personal protection. Although there has been no confirmed significant increase in severe cases or deaths from COVID-19 in the country, it is advised not to let guard down and to maintain protective measures.

How does the current situation of the Cuban health system affect the management of COVID-19 and other diseases?

The Cuban health system is facing serious challenges due to a structural crisis, with coverage of barely 30% of the basic essential medicines and widespread deterioration of medical services. This situation could complicate the response to a potential resurgence of COVID-19 and other diseases such as dengue and hepatitis A. Authorities have strengthened preventive measures and epidemiological surveillance, but the lack of resources remains a significant challenge for effective healthcare.
